Reporting Custom Dimensions in Big Query GA Export from Data Studio

Hello all,

I've been struggling for some days nows and I'm refering to this community in order (I hope) to find some help,

Indeed, we've been trying Data Studio to report on our GA Data: the visualization look beautifull but the major caveat is about the huge sampling applied to our data (We are a 360 customer with millions hits/day)...

Then, I knew the only way to solve this sampling issue was to go through the Big Query export of our Analytics data.

So I setup such an export but I have to admit it is much more difficult to use than the standard GA fields overview presented by Data Studio when you first create the data source. One example is about Custom Dimensions: we are using them a lot and I'm unable to find those custom dimensions in the fields overview (whether in the hit scopped fields or session scopped fields)....

So basically; how do you access custom dimensions from Data Studio when using the Big Query ? Should I create those new fileds myself by using some sort of SQL query?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Regards,

Anthony

Hi Anthony,

It only seems to appear when you connect to BigQuery at 'ALL FIELDS' level - when connecting at hit or session level the dimension does not appear. Hope that helps!

Hi @Anthony G

If you know the index of your custom dimension you can isolate it with the hits.customDimensions.index field in your BigQuery data. Then you could in theory view all hits.customDimensions.value where the hits.customDimensions.index = [your value].

Hope this makes sense, it's something I am only just starting to get my head around too.

Hello Ben,

Thanks a lot for your answer!

I totally got your point (I can see clearly this column hits.customDimensions.index when I access my Big Query dataset from BQ UI) but the problem is that I don't see any trace of it from within Data Studio (in the Data Source field exploration)

Did you find a way to interact with this field in DS?

Have a nice day!

Hello Ben,

Once again, thanks a lot! I don't know how I missed that! I thought only "hit" or "sessions" fields could be selected in the UI!

Have a nice day!
