Adwords overview in Data Studio

The Google Analytics demo report that comes with Data Studio is great. I'm trying to replicate it for my Adwords campaign, starting with the Top Campaigns table in the bottom left. I can't figure out how to specify Campaign as the first column or how to add more columns.

I'd really appreciate guidance.

Thank you.

Hey Arnon,

I'm not sure why but I can't see my reply after I post it.

Anyways, I had a look at the Top campaigns report in the AdWords overview report and I was able to create the same one. Here are the steps:

1. After logging into your Data Studio account, navigate to the Data Sources tab. (Screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0zaNQs2LUYwdmtqZGJDNXphY0E/view?usp=sharing)

2. From the list of Connectors, select AdWords API > You should see your AdWords Account > Select Campaign Performance (Screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0zaNQs2LUYwZXNPUnc0SXBPaEk/view?usp=sharing)

3. Click on Connect to proceed. (Screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0zaNQs2LUYwU2RDT2tIZ1Q4aDA/view?usp=sharing)

4. Review the connection or edit (I did not make a single change) and click on Create Report. (Screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0zaNQs2LUYwM1paM3dMTFRIazA/view?usp=sharing)

5. Click Add To Report (Screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0zaNQs2LUYwSE9wUDI4WEpmcVU/view?usp=sharing)

6. Click on the Table icon to draw a table.(Draw a bigger table so you can adjust the width of the columns easily. In order to add more columns, you just have to add more dimensions or metrics (Screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0zaNQs2LUYwNW1wb3NPcnp3MUk/view?usp=sharing)

7. The Data Source would auto-populate based on the connection we just made, add the dimensions (Campaign and Campaign ID) and the metrics (CTR, Avg. CPC, Cost/conv.) (Screenshot: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0zaNQs2LUYwLVE2enVXXzZ2QTQ/view?usp=sharing)

I hope this was helpful!

Best,
Ahmed

Hi Ahmed,

Thanks for taking the time to go through this. It makes total sense. But several problems:

1) I am able to connect, but get Configuration Error a lot. So I can see Clicks just fine, but CTRs trigger the error. No idea why that is.
2) Two campaigns come up as a row each, but one is no longer active. I can't figure out how to remove campaigns that are no longer relevant.

Hi Arnon,

The configuration error you're seeing might be related to how the AdWords connector is calculating (or attempting to calculate) ratios, such as CTR. Per the Help Center article on AdWords connecter (https://support.google.com/360suite/datastudio/answer/7020275?hl=en&ref_topic=6370347)

"When you are visualizing AdWords data, some combinations of dimensions and metrics might require also including an additional dimension. If this dimension does not exist in your data source, you will see an error with the exact dimension you must include."

(I believe we're working on this connector to avoid having to do this in the future).

As for removing the inactive campaign, you could try using a dimension filter on your table to exclude that campaign.
Hope this helps

Hi Arnon,

For AdWords reports, when you try to use ratios in your reports, you sometimes need to add some missing fields (per this Help Center article: https://support.google.com/360suite/datastudio/answer/7020275?hl=en&ref_topic=6370347).

To remove inactive campaigns, you might try adding a filter to your chart or table. https://support.google.com/360suite/datastudio/answer/6312144?hl=en

Hope this helps!

Rick

Rick E. - is there a way to view counts for active campaigns during that time period?
