I have a primary and back up credit card to pay for my google adwords.  When my primary card reached its spending limit and was maxed out my back up card wasn't charged.  Why?

My google adwords was suspended.  How can I prevent this from occuring?

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for posting your question.

Are you using the automatic payment setting? If you are using manual payments, back up cards will not work. They only work with automatic payments. Here is more information regarding using a back up card.

If you need to switch payment types, here is how you do it.

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account at
  2. Note: If you're a My Client Center account-user and would like to switch a client account's payment option, you should sign in directly to the client's account. You won't be able to make the change if you access your client's account through your My Client Center account interface.
  3. Select the gear icon
  4. Click Billing Preferences.
  5. In the Billing and Payments section, click Edit.
  6. Select the payment option you'd like to use and click Continue.
  7. Fill out all required details (note that some fields may autopopulate) and click Save Changes.

Once you are on automatic payments you want to make sure that you have re-enabled your payment by either retrying your payment or entering new information.

Option A: Retry your existing credit card

If you want us to try charging your existing credit card again, follow these steps:

  1. Sign into your AdWords account at
  2. Click the gear icon and choose Billing preferences.
  3. Click the Retry card button to prompt our system to process your payment.

Option B: Enter different billing information

If you want to try a new credit card for your account, follow these steps:

  1. Sign into your AdWords account at
  2. Click the gear icon and choose Billing preferences.
  3. Next to Billing and payment, click Edit.
  4. Update your billing information.
  5. Click Save.

Here is more information regarding how to resolve billing issues.

Please let me know if this does not work for you and we can try something else.

Hope that helps.
