$2000 in fraudulent Adwords charges on my credit card

Hi,

So I was doing my taxes a few days ago and recognised a series of charges totalling up to nearly $2000 AUD on my bank statements during August 2013 from Adwords. I stopped using Adwords in 2012 and have only just realised this now. I'm located in Australia.

My bank can't do anything about it because it has been over 120 days since the charges occurred.

The charges have the Adwords account number on them (which isn't mine). I've tried calling Adwords billing support, they've practically admitted that the account that made the charges isn't mine. I was told I would be called back, but haven't received a call back. To anyone with a critically thinking brain it's obvious that someone has used my Visa debit card, and the right thing to do would be to refund me the charges, no?

What can I do?

Hi Rhett,

Could you log in to your AdWords account and check if these charges reflect there? If the account charged isn't yours, it could only mean that your CC was used by someone else. In that case, contacting your bank (for a charge back) is the only way to go about it. Please check your AdWords account to be sure.

Hi Sumanth,

Yes I have checked my account transaction history and there were no charges in 2013. Someone has used my credit card, I've already stated my bank can't do anything about it because it is over 120 days. Visa has a policy on chargebacks and they can't be made after 120 days. So now I am reaching out to Google to refund the charges as they should rightfully do. It shouldn't matter if it was yesterday or a year ago, stolen money is still money!

Adwords support called me today to tell me that after escalating it to the 'specialist team', I will not be receiving a refund for these charges and that I need to take it up with my bank. I have already explained is not an option now as it is over 120 days from the charges. It's amazing the Adwords platform let someone in Turkey use an Australian credit card number already associated with an Australian Adwords account. Where is your fraud prevention? you know the money was stolen from me, why is it so hard to get a refund? I've hit a brick wall with Adwords billing support.. I have no choice but to take it to social media.

I'm writing a blog post about this whole situation, we'll see how it goes on reddit and everywhere else I can post it.

What I don't understand if if the charges are fraud, why the bank or the CC issuer is not willing to investigate? There is no "time limit" for a fraud investigation....

Hi,

So I was doing my taxes and my husband recognized a series of charges totaling up to nearly $1000 USD on my bank statements during May 2017 through March of 2018.

Help ?
