Hi @Frances B,

Please find below a help page about the structure of an AdWords account.

An ad group in particular, in a default Search only campaign, contains one or more ads which target a shared set of keywords.

Best,

Lakatos

Per Lakatos and the excellent article above, an Ad Group in a Google Search campaign is a container or folder used to organize a group of tightly-related keywords.  You could think of them, organizationally, like folders in a file cabinet which contain keywords, and perhaps have the ad printed on the cover of the file folder.

Each Ad Group is associated with one or more ads which should be highly relevant to those keywords. The idea is to keep the Ad Groups small enough so the keywords are highly related; that leads to better ad text (more related, or "relevant"), higher quality scores, and better ad performance.

For example, in your campaign you might have ad groups like this:

soy candles

soy wax candles

fragrant oils

It would depend upon the keywords you want to use, to match search terms against.  The best place to start is to identify the search terms you think people will enter to find your products.  You can start this by entering the terms into Google.com. Also the keyword planner comes in handy.
