Hi Suma,

What is a good bounce rate?

Any bounce rate can be termed to be good if the main goal of the website is being achieved efficiently.

Please be aware that bounce rate is there to tell you the extent of engagement your webpage is having with its visitors. It's not a metric to measure the effectiveness of your overall advertising strategies and goals. It's there to help, not to replace your advertising efficiency check strategy.

What should be the optimum bounce rate for a page?

Again, it depends a lot on the kind of advertising goal you have. For instance, if your landing page drives visitors to an external page for conversions, your landing page is bound to have a higher bounce rate.  In the example, if you are not having a higher bounce rate, it means your visitors are not convinced enough to move to the further stage in the conversion funnel.

On the contrary, if your landing page has a video, article, blog etc. which you want your visitors to view or read, a higher bounce rate means, your content is not appealing to the visitors.

In short, the optimum bounce rate depends a lot on the goals which your landing page have.

What to do if my bounce rate is high or low?

Depending on your goals, work on your landing page, your campaign keywords, and ad copies. Make sure your keywords, ad copies, and landing page fall in the same line of relevancy to your advertising goals.

In general, bounce rate should be between 25% to 70%. If it is less, check with your GA code installation, page redirects, and script conflicts. You may be tracking it wrongly.  If it is too high, work on the areas suggested in the paragraph above.

Hope it helps.

Thanks

Hi Suma, just want to add one more thing to Ratan-Jha insights.

You can import Google Analytics metrics in Adwords campaigns to see which is the Bounce Rate on different levels. If you will see that some campaigns or keywords are getting enough clicks but 70-100% bounce rate, you may pause or reduce bids for them.

As Ratan-Jha said, bounce rate depends on your goal. And sometimes, if you have a goal, and your bounce rate is very high, you may not be tracking the goal OK. E.G. If your goal is users contacting your company, make sure that you have a contact form in your landing page and that you are also tracking all contact methods available on the landing page, including things like email links on the footer!
