can't add a negative

I've paused some keywords in an ad group, to create new more targeted ad groups. Now I want to add one of the phrase matches as a negative in the original ad group. but it won't let me, even though the keyword is paused.

I get the following error:

These entries could not be added due to the following reasons:
  • You cannot exclude Keywords that are targeted.

What's all that about? Any ideas?

That is weird.  Did you try deleting the keyword?

I would have to look in your account to see whats happening because its never done that for me before.

You can add negative keywords on a campaign and ad group level, you can also add keywords to a negative keyword list which can be applicapable account wide by adding all or as much campaigns you want in the Shared Library.

Try deleting the keyword then adding it to the negative keyword.

Hi PPCSophie, I've deleted it and it has now let me add it as a negative. Thanks, Neil

I also experienced this and found that the AdGroup for the keyword that generated this error had been paused. Not sure if that sheds any light on anything.
