Why is Google inserting www. into my display URL?

N/A

The correct display URL for my site is http://example.com/. That's how I submitted it when I created my ads. Why is Google inserting www. after //, thereby creating an incorrect address?

Searching through the Help Center has not turned up any answers.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Don

Hi Don, thanks for the replies.  Sorry to disagree but when creating a standard text ad, the http:// dropdown list only appears next to the Destination URL, not the Display URL.  Are you saying you're seeing this drop-down alongside both the Display and Destination URLs when creating a text Ad?  If so, you're using an interface I'm not familiar with.  Are you using AdWords Express?

When you go back to an Ad you've created without the www and have then seen this Ad in the preview tool, does the www now appear in the Display URL?

Are you absolutely certain that you haven't got the www bit in one Ad somewhere in your Group/Campaign and that you're seeing this Ad rather than the one you've just created.  (Sorry, I have to ask).

Hi Don,

I'm not sure I can answer that. You don't need the http:// part in your display url. Try entering as "example.com" instead.

Best of Luck!

I did submit the display URL without the http:// portion (because Google supplies that much and the advertiser just enters the "example.com/" after it). My question was: why has Google been inserting www. after the //, thereby creating an incorrect display URL?

Hi, I've never seen the AdWords interface do this, and to the best of my knowledge it shouldn't be doing this, which would be why you can't find any information in the Help Centre.

Can I first make sure of the terms we're using?  You've mentioned the Display URL, but you've also said that the http:// is already inserted.  The http:// part is only provided in the Destination URL, not the Display URL.  Can you verify which part of the Ad it is that you're seeing this behaviour in?

Can you also tell us when you see the "www" added?  So, assuming you type in "example.com", do you see "www.example.com" appear instantly or is it after you've saved the Ad.  Is it within the interface or live on a Google Search?

Can I also confirm we're talking about a standard text Ad?

Jon explained this extremely thorough.

I would only add that a better way to diagnose such situations is to upload a print-screen and highlight your Ad with a red line rectangle in the Paint application, so that we can see better what you mean.

Thanks for your excellent questions. I'll try to answer them in the order you posed them.

I'm seeing this behaviour in the Display URL. My reference to the http:// already being inserted was just to point out that Google supplied the http:// prefix for me, at the time I created the Display URL. It's the first choice in a drop down list (which I accepted as my selection).

The www.example.com did not appear instantly after typing "example.com," only after the ads were saved. (This has happened with the only two ad campaigns which have gone live.)
In both campaigns, the Display and Destination URLs are identical. They are both standard text ads.

I observe the insertion of the www. whenever I check my ads by using the Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool. When I do so, my ads appear with a display URL of "www.example.com/" instead of "example.com/." This gives searchers an incorrect notion of which website they will reach if they click on either of my two ads.

Thanks to you and Adrian B for helping me with this problem.

You were absolutely correct in disagreeing with me! Sorry that I gave you that bit of misinformation regarding the drop down list. It does, in fact, only appear alongside the destination URL; not the display URL. (Jack one; Don zero.)

Nonetheless, the bottom line is that I filled-in each of the display and destination boxes correctly for each individual standard text ad: Namely, without mistakenly inserting "www." after the http://. Since receiving your last reply, I have carefully checked each of the display URLs in my entire account and each one is written "example.com."

Yet whenever I have checked them with the Preview and Diagnosis tool, the ads being shown to searchers read "www.example.com."

Best regards,
Don

Hi Don, I think it's actually Don 1 Jon 1 because I've just done a quick test on one of my own client Accounts and seen the same issue.  If I hadn't been so certain you were doing something wrong I'd have done this at the beginning.  Sorry.

I'll escalate this as it's clear (now!) that there's a bug here in the tool.

A sincere thanks for all your efforts on my behalf. I don't mean to drag out our correspondence any longer than necessary, but your reply begs the question: From whom can I expect a follow up, and in what form, now that you've escalated this problem?
