When we migrate to new system, how do we update links?

Hi there,

We are about to set up Adwords for lots of campaigns and for 10 different country sites.

And before the year ends we will be chaning platforms from .net to java. This means we will have improven URL address, and it means that all the URL address will change.

My concenr is that, does this mean we have to manually change all the URLs in Adwords? Or is there a better efficient way?

Thanks

Reza

Hi Reza, there's (I think) three different ways you can make bulk changes to Adwords elements such as URLs.

  1. The Adwords Interface itself now supports Bulk Edits - it's a new feature so you may not have noticed it yet.
  2. The Adwords Editor allows you to make changes to multiple Ads/Keywords just by selecting them from a displayed list.
  3. You can use the Scripting tool to search for and replace text.

So, in short, you shouldn't have anything to worry about!

Hi Reza,

There is a bit more involved with changing page names than updating the destination URL's in your AdWords account if you want to maintain landing page QS and organic rankings.

First, you will want to somehow 301 redirect all the old URL's to the new URL's. If you do that it won't take long for the organic index to change the displayed links to the new URL's. If you don't, the old URL's will exist in organic search for a long time. And you don't want people clicking on links to dead pages.

When you change a destination URL for an ad, the ad goes under review and that would stop your campaign for a while. If you change a keyword level destination URL that does not trigger a review. So, once you are done with the redirects, let your current destinations run for a while (as long as you don't have a new domain this will be fine) and create new ads with the new destinations. This has somewhat of an effect of maintaining landing page QS as you switch over to the new URL's.

Sound like a lot of work? It is, but totally worth the effort.

Best of Luck!

Pete
