What's the difference between the keywords under the campaign and the keywords for a specific ad?

Hello

I'm new to AdWords and I'm a little confused.

I used the Keyword Planner find groups of keywords related to my content. From the Keyword Planner I added the groups of words to my campaigns. Then I have gone to create my Ads and it has asked me to enter the keywords for each ad.

I'm confused about what the keywords that appear under the campaign are for? How are they related to the ads, if at all? Should I delete all the ad words from under the Campaign tab?

Thanks

Rose

Hi Rose,

Unable to understand your query, can you please elaborate how you have added to your adwords account. Have you done using excel sheet by downloading or directly added to plan from the keyword planner?
Also, keywords and ads can be added ad adgroup level only not the campaign level. The campaigns are just for setting including network type, budget, targeting, scheduling, ad rotation and to manage all the adgroups within it.

Keyword Planner and groups is rather indicative. Use KWs recommendations and then create campaigns / ad groups separatly. You will have better control.

Do you know AdWords editor - http://www.google.cz/intl/en/adwordseditor/ . It is very usefull tool for managing your account.

Hi Archit

I added Keywords to the campaigns directly from the keyword planner.

I suppose I though it was strange that I had added all these keywords to my account, but then when I went to create an Ad I was asked to type in the keywords. I would have assumed that you could select keywords from the words you have already added to your account. Does that make sense?

Thanks
Rose

Hi Rose,

I hope that you have saved those keywords (which you have added in your plan) directly to your account rather than downloading the plan.

Then there must be a pop-up asking where to save those keywords. Refer to attached screenshot.

So, please check whether you have added those keywords to a new campaign or to an existing campaign. And check if are are creating the ads within the same campaign where those keywords were added.

Please note, if you have added those to a new campaign then during the creation of ads you must need an adgroup where you can create the new ads (ads and keywords are added at adgroup level). And in this case the new campaign will automatically create an adgroup as "My Keyword Ideas" where you will have those keywords which you have added from the planner.

If you have proceeded the same way and still having this issue then better will be if you can share the screenshot where you were again asked to add the keywords.

Hi Rose,

I think the problem here is that you may not have created Adgroups for your keywords in question rather you have made those keywords itself individual AdGroups. Ideally, an adgroup consists of all the related keywords along with the ad copies that you wish to show to your users on the SERP. If I am not wrong , each of your keywords selected in the planner has been added to your campaign as an individual adgroup and when you added ad copies to the account they may have been added/associated with another set of adgroups.

I think you should use the AdWords editor to take a look at your entire account and sort all the keywords out as per your needs. The editor is an offline editing tool so you are safe as long as you do not push any changes to your account. I recently posted a video on the Edtior and how to efficiently use it, if you wish you can have a look here:

Hope this Helps!
