I am wondering the difference between simply excluding a keyword from an adgroup versus adding negative keywords.

Because of different terminologies here I am going to attempt to answer this in a round about way.

Negative keywords can be added by Campaign, By Ad group, As a List, and via a Shared Library.

The terminology of "Exclude Keyword" is common used when creating a LIST and uploading that list to either the shared library or the campaign/ ad group level.

Adding negative keywords is the common general term - where exclude keywords is about the method in which that action takes place.

Basically the end result is the same, just the method in which you use to add negative keywords and the terminology used to describe the action.

I hope that helps.
