Stop words for Keyword Tool and Adwords API

I noticed that AdWords removes some characters from its output. For example, if I enter the keyword 'c++', I get back the statistics for 'c'. The same thing happens for the keyword 'test (keyword)' - I get back the statistics for 'test keyword'. This behavior is true for both the API (TargetingIdeaService; STATS) and the Web UI (Keyword Tool). My question now is: Is there an official list of symbols/words that get stripped (i.e. stop words)?

As a follow up question, how should I handle keywords that contain a stop word? Is it correct to assume that these keywords have a search volume of 0?

P.S: I already posted this question on the adwords api forum but was instructed to post here.

Hi PJ,

Welcome to the forum.

In general, Google search will ignore "special" characters--those that are not letters or numbers. In some cases, it will not ignore those characters. In a live search, "C++" query return results for C++. Now, I need to ask you, which tool or screen are you looking at that has this behavior.

One more question, "how should I handle keywords that contain a stop word?" What do you mena by a stop word?

Best of Luck!

Pete

Hi Pete,

I'm referring to this web UI:

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

And it's equivalent API Service:

https://developers.google.com/adwords/api/docs/reference/latest/TargetingIdeaService

As briefly explained in my original post, a stop word is a symbol or word that a computer program filters out from the output. More on that in here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_words. In my case, I want to know the official list of symbols that get stripped from the output by the AdWords Keyword Tool and TargetingIdeaService API. So far, I have identified the following symbols:

  • +
  • (
  • )
  • <
  • >
  • {
  • }
  • %
  • ;
  • .
  • ,
  • "
  • ^
  • *
  • @
  • !
  • ~
  • |

As you can see, some of them are quite common symbols and it's not unusual to see them in a keyword. So how should I handle keywords that contain these characters? Should I treat them as having 0 search volume?

Are you talking of search terms reports and / or Analytics matched search query report?

I'm not talking about any report - in fact, I'm not familiar with the reports that you mentioned (I'm a software developer; not an adwords specialist/practitioner).

My message above already describes which web tool I'm referring to as well as the programming API that provides the same data as the tool. Just try to input some keywords containing one of more of the special characters listed above and you'll see that what you get back is the data for a "different" keyword (i.e. not exactly what you entered).

Sorry if my thread is in the wrong place. I really feel that this should be in the API forum because of the technical nature of the question. Here's my thread in the API forum: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/adwords-api/OgS7rKNeDXo
