Requirement - targeting text , what is it and how to use ?

Hello,

I noticed in the automated rules menu the requirement "targeting text" for pausing placements.

What is this requirement and how can we use it ?

Is it reffering to filtering the placement name ?

Thank you

Hello Spike,

I received the answer from Google , here it is . It seems that we can use this variable to automatically pause placements which contain unuseful words such as "games".

Hi Adrian,

It was my pleasure chatting with you today!  Thanks for your patience as I spoke with our technical team regarding the use of the "Targeting text" attribute within automated rules.  Our technical team clarified that this attribute actually involves the name of your placements (my apologies for any misconception with my theory that it involved display keywords; I'm glad we caught this).  In essence, this rule allows you to automatically pause or enable certain placements based on their name.

I hope this helps, Adrian!  Please let me know if there's anything else that I can do for you.

Best,

Misha

I' tested it when i saw it there and again today. Doesn't work because
"There are several scenarios where the rules will run, but no changes will be made. It might be because of one of the following restrictions:

You can’t change automatic placements, genders or ages in your Display Network campaigns. However, you can change manual placements, genders or ages."

Hi Adrian,

The "targeting text" field is not required and you can click the [X] next to this requirement field to remove it from the rule's criteria.

I cannot find any explaination as to what "Targeting Text" actually is so I ran a test and this field matches the teext in "display keywords" so "Targeting Text" is the text in display keywords.

Hopefully that answers your question.

All the best,

Spike

I know it is not a mandatory requirement, it is just an option, but I want to learn what this option can do, so I will ignore the first part of your advice.

How exactly did you find out that the "targeting text" is the display keywords ? What steps did you take ?

How can the display keywords be used as requirement for any automated rule , can you imagine an example ?

Can anyone else try to give an answer to this technical question ? Maybe Google staff who designed the options from the automated rules ?

Hi Adrian,

I tested this by added only 1 display keyword to a campaign and then entering that keyword into the 'targeting text' field - I imagine they labelled this field 'targeting text' because the display keyword is targeting that text in content.

An example of why you would want the keywords to be used as a requirement would be if you were running a promotion and wanted to paused certain display keywords when the promotion finished or you wanted to paused certain display keywords based on performance metrics. There are a number of reasons why this feature has been added - I've hunted around everywhere online for you to try and find some documentation but this was to no avail.

If you are desperate for a response from a Google representative then I suggest contacting an AdWords specialist by telephone on 0800 169 0409.

Sorry that I can't be of more help..

All the best,
Spike Patching

I see, so what you are saying is that this type of requirement can have a use for the Automated rule "Pause display keywords" , when we are in the tab Display Network / Display Keywords.

I'll contact google through chat to see if they know more.

Thank you Smiley Happy

I thought I could filter out low quality sites with this condition.

Thank you for explaining these details.
