Remarketing Lists: Rule Based and Tag Based

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to give Remarketing a go for my website.

So here's what I've done so far:

- I added the remarketing tag to my code for all the pages on my site and created a general remarketing list based on this tag. (LIST A)

- To target people who visited a particular section of my site, I made another remarketing list based on a URL-rule. (LIST B)

- I created a 'Custom Combination' where I say people need to be part of LIST A AND LIST B.

=> This custom combination is the one I've connected to my remarketing campaign.

Does this approach make sense or am I doing something wrong? (Currently, only my general list seems to populate so far)

Thanks!

Kind Regards,

Steven

HI

Lets take an example here. Lets keep example a simple one.

  • you have 2 pages on your website. A landing page and A thankyou page.
  • You have placed new remarketing code on both pages
  • List A : Users who have visited either of 2 pages
  • List B: URL based: Users who have visited landing page
  • List C : URL based Users who have visited thankyou page
  • List D: List B - List C
  • I believe you dont need B & C lists you can directly create D list in the custom combination while creating remarketing list as shown in image below
  • Now the question is why all other lists than List A are empty: Chances are you have combination that are canceling eachother out .

Hope this helps

Hi! Thanks for the reply!

I see that all of my lists are starting to populate now. So that issue is gone.

However, what you are saying is that I could have just created List B on a URL based rule and add this list to my campaigns?

I don't need to create a custom combination between the URL based and the general tag list?

Kind Regards,

Steven

Your "main list" - if it's pn all your pages - will collect all the visitors to your site - doesn't matter how they get there (adwords, organic, referral, etc)

You can then use the url to develop a second list... so, all the people that looked at any page with "widgets" in the url for example.

you can then advertise to this list only - pushing your widgets... you don't need to include the main list as that is everyone...

Then extend this by starting another list based on your "tahkn you for your purchase" url... this iwll only be those people (of all those on the main list) who got to the thank you page - and they can only get to the thank you page by completing a purchase...

Then make a combniation list with all of the widgets list and none of the thank you list - you now have a list of all the people that looked at your widgets, but didn't buy on their visit.

Once you get your head around these basics the possibilites are almost endless...

And then you can look at the duration of lists.... and make combinations of those.... but that's a whole other story!
