Need Help Understanding Ad Groups (keywords and ads relationship)

I am new to a job and one of my tasks is to manage the already running adwords account. I am finally starting to understand how to properly use adwords, but I am still confused about some things.

The account was running many ad groups with over 50 keywords, so I have went through and made smaller more specific ad groups. After I had done, that I realized that some ad groups that I broke down had ads in them. Do I need to move those ads into a specific group too or are they running separate?

If anyone could explain the relationship between the ads and keywords actually that would be very helpful.

Hi Natalie W,

AdGroups include closely related keywords and ads closely related to the keywords. Keywords can only trigger ads from the same AdGroup. A keyword can trigger any of the ads in the group.

You will need to write ads for the new ad groups. If you just use the same ads as the old groups, there was really no point to separating them. Organize your keywords tightly by theme and write your ad copy to that theme.

Best of Luck!

Thank you for your reply!

going off of that, there were a couple of ad groups with no keywords but have ads... So since there are no keywords are those ads pointless?

Hi Natalie,

If you search network campaigns and do not have keyword in your ad group but have ads, that ad groups are not useful. AdWords populates " Ad group without any targeting". So add some keywords in that ad group.

I would also suggest to read the below link for more information about Keywords, ads:-

Hi Natalie W,

Assuming your predecessor knew what she was doing, that's likely a Display Network campaign. You'll find the keywords, if any, on the Display Network tab.
