Is modified broad match right for us ?

Hi

We’re a new Adwords user and we’re unsure how effective modified broad match will be for us in delivering good targeted traffic and excluding the majority of not-relevant traffic as we’re a very small business with a small budget. We already use phrase match and exact match. So can the community advise the sort of traffic we might get on these examples pls :

cleaning jobs - phrase & exact match - we use already
+cleaning jobs - our proposal for using modified broad match

we assume that if we use +cleaning+jobs ….we’ll end up with all sorts of traffic related to cleaning but not jobs - and vice versa ?
Typically the sort of searches we want are for :

school cleaning jobs
jobs for cleaning offices
etc etc

Cleaning is just one example….we do security jobs, engineering jobs, landscaping jobs and many more.
We have a pretty extensive negative keyword list already.

My only recommendation, measure results and analyze over a few weeks and then make a decision.

Gordon,

The modified broad match behaves like broad match, even though you can specify one or more keywords that must always be present, the modified broad match can still return some very irrelevant search terms! How small is your budget? It definitely could burn through your budget without the proper - kw's.

Here is an example from a campaign I am running, all of these search terms were irrelevant.

Anyways you probably get the point. The only way to tell what keywords you will get is to try it out. People type in some pretty unpredictable things..! There is no possible way you could think of everything irrelevant and make them - keywords.

In your case, if you want to use it, maybe try (+school +cleaning jobs) or (+school +cleaning +jobs) if you use (+cleaning +jobs) that may be good, you still could get some pretty irrelevant search terms e.g. tools to help make cleaning bathroom less of a job.. idk.

You may be better off sticking with a bunch of strong variations of your keyword on exact or phrase match if you haven't already.. few quick examples

school cleaning jobs
cleaning jobs in schools
school cleaning vacancies
cleaning school jobs
job cleaning school
school cleaners vacancies
school cleaner vacancies
cleaning schools jobs
cleaning jobs at schools
cleaning jobs schools
looking for school cleaning job
jobs cleaning schools
job school cleaner
cleaning job in school
school housekeeping jobs
primary school cleaning jobs
after school cleaning job

Hi Ryan

Thanks.......your example has really focused my mind ! We do only have a very small budget so the thought of large numbers of irrelevant clicks is scary. So we'll perhaps just do a very small experiment on say 5 keywords only on Modified Broad to see what happens.

Exactly, maybe test out some modified broad match on a few of the different job fields. If it ends up working for you, then great. If not, then at least you know you're not missing out on many opportunities. Let me know how it goes.
