Interests & remarketing - AND or OR operation?

Visitor ✭ ✭ ✭

How is the interests & remarketing tab working? If I add some interest categories and also some remarketing lists, how are they related? Is an OR or an AND operation?

It will display the ads to people interested in those categories plus to people from my remarketing list (so two audiences) OR it will print the ads to people who are in my remarketing list AND are also interested in those topics? (just one very specific audience).

Thank you.

Hello there;

This is a very interesting question, and one of the most confusing topics on the display network, which  we had a long discussion about ;

Generally speaking in Remarketing + Interests, unless specific cases, the "OR"  operator applies

Further to what has been said , in the past you had the ability to create a custom combination with the AND rule using interests and remarketing, but this feature has been retired.

Even if in the bellow link is still explained how to do this :

https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/2611642

"  In AdWords, you can use custom combination lists to build sets of conditions from existing remarketing lists (including those lists you create in Analytics), interest categories, and existing combinations of lists, and then display your remarketing ads to visitors who meet those conditions.

For example, if you wanted to remarket to people who had visited the product pages for your new hybrid car and whose web travels had also demonstrated an interest in hybrid vehicles, you could:

    • Create a list in Analytics based on an Advanced Segment that identified visitors to your hybrid-car pages.

  • In AdWords, combine that list with visitors who fall into the interest category of Hybrid & Alternative Vehicles  "

In this other link it is explained that the feature is retired :

https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/3341468?hl=en

"Starting around September 19, you'll no longer be able to edit existing custom combinations that contain interest categories, or make new custom combinations using interest categories."

However an interest category if it is simply added , it is just like another remarketing list, it is the list of people who have visited some other sites outside your reach. This is why the OR condition is applied, you are targeting 2 audiences, your particular visitors OR the visitors of other sites, it is a logical reunion, not an intersection.

One option... and I have used this approach a couple of times - is to set up two separate campaigns - one which targets interests, the other the remarketing lists. The principal reason for doing this is to bid harder on the remarketing lists since they tend (in general, not always) to perform better in terms of conversions and general engagement.
