I'm trying to use some Japanese keywords, in Japanese characters. Why do I get an error message?

I've selected Japanese as the language, and the characters are correct (From a Japanese colleague), but I get the message "These entries could not be added due to the following reasons:
Keywords cannot contain non-standard characters like: ! @ % , *"

Do I need to use Latin characters?

The system doesn't like that long dash "―", for some reason. I guess you'd have to replace it with a regular dash "-" or a space (might want to consult with someone who speaks Japanese for a proper replacement). Either of these works.

Hi Bertie,

Can you provide an example of one of the Japanese words / sentences here please? I haven't had to tackle this sort of situation myself before but I'm interested to find the solution.

Thanks Bertie,

I just tried creating a couple of dummy ads in both AdWords Editor and the live interface using the keyword you gave me. They got past the approval process for both standard and expanded text ad types, as you can see here -

With that being the case, is there a chance that there is actually a special character hidden within other words / phrases that your friend has supplied you with? Looking at some of these Japanese characters, I imagine it could be easy to miss.

If you want, feel free to paste a picture of a disapproved ad and I'll try to help further.

I'm creating the ad on .com, target: Japan, language : Japanese

It's the keywords that fail. Maybe I should be using Latin characters instead?
