Hey All:

I need to exclude Cuba, Syria and Iran.  I'm getting impression counts from those locales and need to exclude them.

How can I do that?

THEY'RE NOT LISTED as entitles!

Regards,

A new Adwords customer-becoming-increasingly-disenchanted.

You have multiple targeting options under Location options (advanced) > Target

If you select: "people in, searching for, or who show interest in my targeted location (recommended)" then someone in Havana (or Tahiti or New Jersey) searching for your keyword + NYC may see your ad.

Try changing to: "People in my targeted location"

If you JUST want to exclude Syria and Cuba, but still allow in folks from Tahiti and New Jersey, you need to do that by IP address.  You can go to the IP Exclusion section of the location targeting (See https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2456098?hl=en)

Syria: http://www.nirsoft.net/countryip/sy.html

Hi Bobby,

Can you share with us the locations you are currently targeting as well as which options you have selected for the Advanced Location Options?

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do here.

AdWords doesn't allow you to select those countries as location targets because Google is a U.S. company which can't do business in those countries. If you can't add a location as a positive target, AdWords won't let you add it as a negative target (i.e., exclusion), either:

Google doesn't block people from using free services (like Google Search) in those countries, so you may occasionally get impressions in those countries. (It's actually really weird that you're getting a noticeable number of impressions from all three -- what the heck are you advertising?)

One thing that might help: Make sure you're not targeting "All languages" -- that often increases your impressions in weird places.

Michael: I'm advertising technology consulting services. Plain vanilla, network/hardware/software installation/troubleshooting and training. Not only that, I'm targeting very local businesses in NYC because I don't even own a car!   How I'm getting impressions in those countries I have no Idea.

I blame the Display network algorithm.

BTW, It's really DUMB that you can't add a negative exclusion unless it's also listed as a positive exclusion. Really short-sighted as political/economic relationships change all the time in today's world.
