My error message for preview is Not showing against keyword as one of your other ads is already showing for this keyword. Why is this happening and what does this mean to ad visibility?

Hi @Tammy H

Basically more than one keyword you are bidding on is eligible to be shown for the search term you are testing. For instance, let's say you bid on

"las vegas hotel " and "vegas hotel and casino" (both phrase match)

If someone were to search with "las vegas hotel and casino", then both keywords you bid on have the potential to receive the impression. One may receive the impression over the other for various reasons, quality score or bid being the most likely reasons.

So you can still potentially still receive the impression, but you just may not receive it for the ads associated with that keyword for which you receiving the message. If you want that specific search term to trigger an ad in a specific ad group, then add it as an exact match negative to the other ad group currently receiving the impression.

Hope that helps.

Hi.  Thx. You had me up to the 'So...' part.  I prob should've been more specific: I have 1 Campaign containing 1 Adgroup with 2 ads, both using and relevant to the same set of keywords.  I want the search terms to trigger either of the ads (to assess the strength of the ad) so don't want to exclude any keyword. For example, one of the problematic keywords is 'dairy farm jobs' and its set as a broad match.  Can you further advise?

what you need to do is rotate your ads, if you are using the same keywords, to see which of the two is better performing. to do do this go to

  1. Sign in to your AdWords.
  2. Click the Campaigns tab at the top.
  3. Under All campaigns, click the name of the campaign to be delivered.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. In the "Advanced settings" section, click Ad delivery: Ad rotation, frequency capping. Note that the availability of certain settings, like this, may depend on the campaign type you choose. Compare campaign types in detail and learn how you can change yours.
  6. Click Edit next to "Frequency capping."
  7. Enter the number of impressions. The value must be a whole number (such as 100, not 100.5).

If you are going to use  'dairy farm jobs' make sure you add plenty of negative keywords to avoid irrelvant keywords
