I am wanting to test drive some keywords. How is that accomplished ?

Can you explain what you mean by "test drive"?
Google doesn't allow you to run ads against keywords for free to see which ones suit you best (although, that would be awesome!). If you want to test keywords, you'll have to pay for them.

If you're looking at testing keywords in a controlled setting to see how they perform against your current keywords, you might want to look into campaign experiments: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2385204?hl=en
