High competition keywords with no suggested bid

I'm trying to understand how a keyword or an ad group as shown in the keyword planner can be in high competition but there is no suggested bid for the keyword or any of the keywords in the ad group.

If high competition means there are a lot of advertisers bidding on the keyword and no suggested bid means Google doesn't have enough data to suggest a bidding price due to low search volume how is it possible because these are two conflicting things? Can someone explain this to me?

Hi Lorna
The suggested bid is very arbitrary and depends on so many different factors that it's next to useless.

While I don't know why this is happening, I'd recommend just adding the keyword and play around with your bids. You'll get a first page and top of page bid estimate almost immediately in your account and that will be far more accurate (although far from completely accurate).

In a bid to be shown it has to be statistically significant. It could be that there is high competition but the variance is broad, hence - no suggested bid.
