Help with Adwords Remarketing Tags.

Hello Smiley Happy

I have a question regarding the Adwords Remarketing Tags.

For some time I have used the Adwords Remarketing Tags, and with no problems, but suddenly I’m experiencing problems. Some of my Remarketing Tags is just not counting users anymore. As an example, one Remarketing Tag hasn’t counted users in the last 2 months! When I first started using this Remarketing Tag, it counted users correctly (compared with Google Analytics).

After a long period of time, where I have been in contact with the Google support team, who just told me “It looks fine”, I really need some advice to solving this problem. Smiley Happy

I have looked closely on the code of every of my Remarketing Tags and tried to compare them, and the only difference in some of the Remarketing Tags is the “var google_conversion_color”.

In some of the Remarketing Tags (some of them are not counting users correctly) the color code is like this:

var google_conversion_color = "666666";

And the other Remarketing Tags (all of them are counting users correctly) have this color code:
var google_conversion_color = "ffffff";

Does it matter which color code is being used?

It’s a bit weird if it does matter, because the code is just generated from the system when you create a new Remarketing Tag. :-/

I really hope you have an answer to this problem.

Regards

Søren

Hi Søren,

Just in case you are still wondering, the google_conversion_color value should have no effect on the code. It simply defines the background color of the "tracking pixel". The error must be somewhere else.

I could see if the color were defined incorrectly it could stop you code from running. For example,

var google_conversion_color = ffffff;

would cause an error (unquoted string) and would most likely stop the execution of that block of code, meaning the visitor would not be added to the re-marketing list.

Best of Luck!

HI

This is strange but not unheard of, Sometimes you dont see the list increasing but suddenly it jumps after a few days. Can you tell us since how many days it has stopped increasing?

Hi Somujen,

I'm curious about the duration you have set for your audience lists and also if you're noticing the list sizes shrinking.  Perhaps after 'a while' you're now running into the end of your duration for some of the cookied users and they are falling off the back end while users are added to the front end.  This is just speculation as I'm unaware of how your remarketing is set up or what levels of traffic you are dealing with.

What kind of numbers are you working with here?  Do you have 100's on your lists or 1000's?

I have no knowledge of a color code having any impact on anything technical with tracking your cookied users.

Hi somujen,

I think you should cross check that tags are still in place where they should be (remarketing tag should be just before the closing </body> tag in your source code on each page.) At times it happens that Webmaters messes up the codes while doing other stuff of their own on pages.

If the tags are placed correctly then I think you should try removing the remarketing tag from few pages (with high number of visits) & then place it again on these pages. This way you'll come to know if it's not working due to some issue in the code itself.

Hi Somujen,

Thats is correct that the parameter in the code var google_conversion_color define the background colour of the tracking pixels and they do not have any effect on the code.Earlier, all Google conversion codes had the parameter var google_conversion_color="ffffff"; while all the remarketing tags had the parameter var google_conversion_color="666666". Now, Google uses "ffffff" in both. However, this change will not effect your tags in anyway.

My suggestion would be to check the placement of your remarketing code. Sometime, it may happen that while we edit our website or pages, we might make some changes in the code or its placement due to oversight Smiley Happy

Also, if you are using a custom combination as your audience list, make sure you have created the right combination of 'and' and 'or'. Apart from this, make sure you are using the right display network setiing of 'Specific Reach'.

Hope this helps.

Hi Tom

I'm working with numbers right above 20k. The duration of the code is 365 days, but I have only used Remarketing Tags for the last 7-8 months.
