There were many questions posted on this Community around CTR (clickthrough rate). In many cases it depends on your product or service, as well as on your ad texts, keywords, the Quality Score, campaign settings etc. In order not to confuse you with too many details, here is one way to analyse your keywords performance and improve your CTR.

What is CTR and what is a good CTR?
Please read this article written by Kim, our Top Contributor.

Analyse the account data:

In order to start improving your CTR, you need to understand your data first. Try the following:

  • Run a report to analyse your CTR for each ad group over the past few months.
  • If you see that certain ad group is underperforming, run a report to analyse the ad groups at a keyword level by running a keyword diagnosis to see if there are particular keywords that have a low CTR and are bringing down the overall CTR.

Take action:

  • Remove the keywords that are not performing well. To remove underperforming keyword/s, first select them and then click on the Change status button at the top of the table and click Delete.

Why don’t you try it right now by clicking on the button below.

Kim, our Top Contributor, shared her tip how to improve your CTR. She said: “Comb through your search terms reports to identify any search terms that do not fit and add these terms as negative keywords.”

And that’s exactly my today’s tip. Negative keywords can help you to prevent your ads from showing on irrelevant searches, improve your CTR, reduce your cost and increase your ROI. I think Alex explained it really well in this short video that you can watch to get a better understanding.

What to do next?

  •    Click the Keywords tab.
  •    Click the Keyword details button above your statistics table and select "All".
  •    Go over the list and idetify those keywords that don't fit your advertising goals.

Every AdWords account contains a CTR column where you can evaluating your ads performance. This is the number of user clicks divided by number of times your ad text is shown.

In order to keep this number growing, it’s important to optimize your ad text. Your ad text is what the user sees first. In order to catch attention of users coming from the search network, you should make sure that your ad is relevant, accurate and competitive. In order to know what works and what doesn't, you should experiment with at least 2-3 ad texts.

How can you improve your ad text?

  • Be specific.
  • Use your most relevant keywords in your ad text. (This is where a good structure of your campaign will pay off.)
  • Use special offers.
  • Include call to action.
  • Get into the point. You have only 35 characters per line, so use them wise.
  • Read the Text Ad Guidelines and Policies.
