GSN - why do I get clicks on websites that don't have my keywords?

Hi there, hope you can help me,

I have a few ad groups (GSN) in which I'm using display keywords as the only targeting method.

How come do I get automatic placements (and clicks) that don't have any of my keywords?

(I searched for my own keywords on those placements using the "site:example.com" google's advanced search query)

Many thanks

Hello,

This concept is basically called Contextual Targeting where the AdWords system is going to match the theme based on the keywords you are using to target Google Display Network (GDN). System also checks the text, language and other parameters and based on that your ads are matched to the automatic placements.

I would suggest you to review the Automatic Placements and exclude the irrelevant ones so that next time, your ads are not displayed on those particular placements. Similarly, you can also add the relevant placements under Managed Placements (if you want), in case you want the System to try and show your ads more often there.

Hi Ricardo F,

Do you mean GSN (Google Search Network) or GDN (Google Display Network)?

Thanks,

Pete

Hi thanks. I get it now. I thought that the keywords had to explicitly be on the placements to trigger my ads. "Contextual" has a much broader meaning all together...

Cheers,
