Final URL vs destination URL

Hello,

First post on here as I think I should start getting more involved with the community.

Recently I've seen Final URL pop up a lot, whether making image ads that link to a web page or adding sitelinks to ad extensions. I was just wondering what the difference between Final URL and Destination URL is?

Google recommends using Final URL so I have been but in the past I'm sure it was destination URL that was the recommended option. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Tom,

The Upgraded URL information is listed here:

Basically the destination URL allows for better "tracking" if you use any tracking paramters or 3rd party services for tracking.

If you don’t use tracking, there's no difference between final URL and destination URL. It's a good idea to get in the habit of using final URLs.

Managing tracking and redirection URLs

You're familiar with a destination URL—it's the web address people click to get to your landing page. If you use tracking, you also use the destination URL field for tracking parameters and redirects to third-party tracking services. This upgrade replaces the destination URL field with a final URL field, and creates a new field for tracking management. If you don’t use tracking, you won’t need to change a thing.

I have read several articles and several threads but i am still confused about the purpose of the Final URL.

If i am using Tracking Template will it always override Final URL and therefore Final URL will never be used/executed?

I think it's important to note the type of tracking that requires the use of upgraded URLs. You only need to configure your final URL if you are routing your clicks through a 3rd party tracking URL.
