Duplicate Key Words in Different Ad Groups

Hello Everyone!

I am sure this question must have been asked many times before but i dont seem to be getting a solution for the same.

To put it simply i have multiple ad groups with the same key words targeting different locations and having different settings. So my question is will the same keywords be competing when the search is done from a particular location?

I have made sure that the ad groups are not targeting the same locations which would eliminate the chance of the same key words competing. Theoretically it should be working fine but the identical key word  seems to be triggering only one of the adgroup (set for that location) where as the same keyword is not triggering any adgroup for the other targeted location.

Hope the question is understandable. Looking for suggestions.

Thank You.

Hi @Suva I,

Just to update you, the location targeting and other settings are available at campaign level not the ad group level.

Now, if the ad groups are associated with different campaigns having different location settings then there will be no such conflict.

It's good to segregate the campaigns with locations, to adjusts budgets and other settings as per your goal and ROI.

Hi Suva

Generally puting this same keyword in many adgroups is a bad idea. You can target locations on campaign settings not ad groups.

I really advice you to run one campaign for all your locations and then use locations report to analyze performance in particular cities or regions. Then when you see some locations are performing better, you can run another campaign strictly to this location.

I was testing this solution. After some weeks I saw that some locations aren't profitable and I stopped them.

I wish you good luck

Well after a few hours of updating my campaigns i rechecked the keywords and the keyword is being triggered for both the campaigns with different location settings. Seems like the changes took some while to be updated. But the same keyword in the one of the campaigns is not being shown due to poor ad rank where as it is working fine for the other campaign.

Having different campaigns for various locations gives me more option to control my budget and the other settings.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes! That is exactly my aim. To identify the locations which are working well and to have different campaigns for various locations with different settings.

I have found that the duplicate keyword is being triggered in one of the campaigns where as the same keyword is being shown as having a low ad rank in the other campaign. Both the campaigns have the same landing pages. I have also updated the Maximum CPC of both the campaigns as the same, waiting for the changes to be updated. Will recheck in some time if that will work.

Any Suggestions on how to go about Choosing the Keywords and increasing the quality score of the keywords? I understand that getting a lot of perfect matches for a particular keyword increases the quality score but when there are a huge number of combinations which are possible for a single keyword, selecting the perfect keyword is a task. I also understand that broad match does not help the quality score. Also does the Quality score of a particular keyword decrease or increase over time depending upon the CTR and the impressions?

Thank You.
