Do active keywords in paused ad groups count for keyword limit?

My account reached the keyword limit at 5 million. If I pause ad groups with active keywords, would that decrease the keyword count in the eyes of AdWords or do I still need to delete the keywords?

Hi Luis,

Welcome to the community!

Pausing keywords will not decrease the keyword limit.

This is the information in the help article - 5 million individual targeting items per account (such as keywords, placements, audience lists, and product targets)

A keyword is counted even when it is paused.

I was thinking this limit was considered "infinite" number that would never be reached...
How can you manage that many?

Hi Luis, I must second Moshe's comment; 5 million Keywords is a huge number, what exactly is it you're advertising?  Your budget must be immense.

Bear in mind that if a Keyword is to be effective, it must be allowed to match terms as often as possible so if you have 5 million active Keywords, you should have a daily budget that can support those 5 million Keywords having a 100% impression share (or close).  Even if the CPC was only 10c, you'd still need a budget of $500,000 per day for just one click each...

Can you give us some clues to your business?  Although there are circumstances where a very large number of Keywords is appropriate, they're quite rare, as Moshe has said, I believe the limit of 5 million was intended to be effectively infinite - more than anyone should ever need.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the answer!

This is a RTC, so each keyword is a product, and even though we are not advertising in all products at the same time because of inventory, we did continue to create new keywords as products or SKU become available.

My question comes because we already reached the 5 million limit so I wanted to know what to do with the products, which in this case are keywords, that are no longer available. It seems that pausing the ad group that contains these out of inventory product is not enough, so I should just delete them?

Since these are specific product names they are very long tail and the spend is quite small.

Thanks!

Luis
