Difference Video Ad and TrueView Ad

Dear all,

I am currently writing my master thesis on vlogging and therefore need to describe the advertising possibilities advertisers have on YouTube. I now came across the display specs help (https://support.google.com/displayspecs/?hl=en#topic=4588474) that shows the options I have. There you can find the distinction between Video Ads (formerly in-stream ads) and TrueView in-stream ads. Video Ads are further classified into skippable and non-skippable ads. For me it seems as if skippable video ads are the same as TrueView in-stream ads, is that correct? But why is it listed as two separate forms of advertising?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Best,

Sina

You came to the right place to get that clarified.

TrueView in-stream video ads are the ones that you can skip after 5 seconds. The regular video ads you mention cannot be skipped.  There is another important difference between the two. TrueView in-stream video ads are setup and purchased in the self-serve Adwords platform. The regular video ad is not.  It must be a part of what's called a reserved media buy. These reserved media buys are for advertisers with large budgets and want to commit to a specific amount of views and pay for them in advance.   In the self-serve Adwords platform, it's pay as you go, and you can spend as little or as much as you like. There is no upfront commitment like in a reserved media buy.  More info on the reserved media buy here: https://support.google.com/partners/answer/6030919?hl=en
