I set the daily budget to $0.70, two hours later I've spent $4.07?!

Hi @Toddler T,

My best guess is you had already spent that amount before you applied the 0.70 setting to your daily budget. Chances are you were not aware of this fact at that particular moment in time due to a delay in reporting of costs within your account.

Best,

Lakatos

Agreed.  It's going off of the highest budget you had set for that day.

Hi Toddler T,

This is called overdelivery. You will never be charged higher than your daily budget mulitplied by 30.4(Avg.number of days in a month). Check here for more details - https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/6312?hl=en

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Sakthi

@Rakesh Kumar @Shanee_Kirk @Lakatos

I started the campaign with a $0.36 pd budget for two weeks, after 5 minutes I changed it to $0.70pd for one week:

@Sakthi M

I don't really get that last point:

  • However, in a given billing period, you're never charged more than the average number of days in a month (roughly 30.4) times your daily budget. For campaigns that are paused in the middle of the month or that otherwise don't run for the full month, you may see discrepancies between your average daily budgets and your total charges.

What is a billing period?

I have $40,- on my account and was planning on setting a few $5,- ads on a couple of my video's for a few weeks, slow and steady. It's strange to me that the weekly budget is reached in two hours even though I set it at $0.36 first and $0.70 second.

Hi @Toddler T,

Yes, you may see the differences. It is called overdelivery.

  • It's possible that you'll be charged less or sometimes slightly more than your average daily budget amount on a given day. To help make sure that your ad can run a little more on days when it's very popular, your daily budget is used like an average: on any single day, you can receive up to 20% more in costs than your daily budget, but other days will be capped at a lower amount to make up for it. This is called overdelivery.

Check this new link about why your costs might exceed your daily budget and how you will be charged on monthly basis - https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2375423?hl=en&ref_topic=3123046

Please check your ad delivery method selection under the settings tab. If it is in accelerated mode, then change it to standard mode. I would also suggest you use bid simulator to get insight about how a bid change can effect the ad performance.

Thanks,

Sakthi

Hey Toddler T,

Seems like this is a common issue these days!

I just answered another thread like this here: https://www.en.advertisercommunity.com/t5/Basics-for-New-Advertisers/CAMPAIGN-SPENT-MORE-THAN-DAILY-...

But tailored for you, here you go!

Google states that AdWords can spend up to 30.4 times your Daily Budget, to ensure your ads get good traffic, etc. Google will never go past that max within a month. So if your budget is $0.70/day, it could potentially spend $21.28 within one month.

If you are like me, and a little more budget-wise, I'd recommend creating an automated pause rule on your account to run every day at the same time. This way your campaign will pause at that time if it has reached a certain amount spent, to avoid spending any more that day.

You can easily set up a "Pause Campaigns When" rule by following these instructions: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2472779?hl=en

Just don't forget to also create an "Enable Campaigns When" rule so your campaign starts fresh the next day!

@Ruthy B

That seems absolutely ridiculous though!

Imagine that being the rule at any other shop, ordering 1 plate of food and getting 30..

..Google Adwords is literally unworkable then.
