Hi Farr39,

conversion tracking lets you know about action which happens after customers clicks on your ad. Let say for example, he downloads a datasheet, or purchases your product. It is about how much your keywords are helping you in converting clicks into final objective. For ex, if your CPC for a particular keyword is $10 and it helps you get business of worth $500. Then this conversion measurement or tracking comes as a benchmark in analyzing effect of your AdWords campaign.

You can have more information on conversion tracking here:

I hope this helps.

Hello Farr39,

The Conversion rate does not measure new/returning or total traffic. Conversions are visits to a page where you put the conversion code. For example the Thank you page after a purchase.

Read here about the Conversion rate

"number of conversions and dividing that by the number of total ad clicks"

The "total traffic through the add" is reported in the Ads tab under the column "Clicks" or if you want for a certain time-frame total traffic obtained through adwords, you have to add clicks from all campaigns or you can look in the billing tab to make a total of charged clicks.

If you want a measurement of New Visits and Returning visits for your AdWords Campaigns , you can use Google analytics reports, drill down to Acquisition / AdWords / Campaigns and the first 3 columns count  :

Visits    % New Visits   New Visits

Hello!

Google calculates conversion rate with due consideration of clicks only, not the unique visits. For e.g. if Adwords interface shows 100 clicks but actually there are only 95 unique visits, then Google will consider the number 100 in order to calculate the conversion rate which is actual the number of clicks not unique visits.
So conversion rate is total number of conversion divided by total number of clicks.
