Clicks do not add up to 100% on in-page analytics?

I'm sure there is a simple explanation for the above question, but after scouring Google for a frustrating hour, I thought I would turn to you good people to see if anybody has the answer?

Answers on a postcard please.....

Hi Nathan,

There are couple of reason why there is a difference in clicks in adwords and  visits in analytics.

  • Click to call extension: If you are using this, a person who clicks your phone number is counted in adwords but not in analytics because they didn't visit your website.
  • If a user clicks on your ad and then click back on their browser and then clicks on your ad again, this can be registered as a single visit.
  • If a user has javascript disabled
  • If a user clicks your ad but leaves your website before it loads up the tracking code.

Appreciate the reply Jeremy.

My query was really about the clicks on the internal links on In-Page Analytics.  They only ever add up to around 40%.

Hi Nathan,

I took a quick look at your website. The in page analytics sometimes has difficulty with drop down menus. I also think that your job search function might be causing some tracking problem. One thing to keep in mind is that the in page analytics doesn't actually track where a user clicks, it just tracks what link was click (so its not true UI tracking). So if you have more then one link to a particular page both links will have the same percentage and if you added them all up you would get more then 100%.

Hi Nathan,

You may get better answers on the Analytics forum, this forum is for AdWords.

Yes, GA can have a hard time tracking clicks on drop-down menus, if those menus are created with a script (at least that's how it works for my sites). That is not the case with your website.

You do appear to have multiple links to your home page. Each of those show 8.9% of clicks. That's not telling you each of the links got the same number of clicks. It is a total of all clicks on all links to the home page. I use query string values to get counts on each link. For example, the link at the top with your logo image I would llink to "http://www.coburgbanks.co.uk/?logo", the one in the top menu line "http://www.coburgbanks.co.uk/?topmenu", the ones along the side "http://www.coburgbanks.co.uk/?Specialists", etc. That will give you counts for each of the links to your home page, but it also fragments your home page pageviews counts.

When you hover over the top of one of the drop-down menus, do numbers show up for the other links? There should be numbers there. It takes a little time for them to show up. Hover over one of those things and wait 30 seconds or so. Numbers should show up.

I've never really added up the percentages. Interesting question.

Best of Luck!

Pete
