Can I detect if someone has come through a PPC ad on my site to display a different phone number?

Hello, I have been asked by our SEO team if we can display a different phone number to people who came to our site through PPC to make it easier to track leads that called in. Is there a way I can discover these people server-side so I can display the different content?

Thanks,
Ellie

Hi Ellie,

You can use website call conversion tracking to track phone calls from users who made it to your website after clicking one of your PPC ads. This tool will display a custom phone number on your website to PPC users.

Just follow the step-by-step instructions here:

Hi Elinor, to add a different number to in your ad copy, you will have to make changes in your call extension, which can be done at the campaign level. So just go to the campaign> ad extensions> call extension and then edit the number.

Hope this helps.

Hey Ellie,

A few things:

#1 Google can provide for you a free Toll-Free Number that you can use in your AdWords ads & extensions. See info below:

Call Only Ads: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/6341403?hl=en

Call Extensions: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2453991?hl=en

How phone call tracking works: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/6100664

Google will provide you with a 'Google Forwarding Number' which is essentially a toll-free number. That being said its not recommend to use this number on your website if you want to differentiate the types of calls ... unless ... you create a dedicated landing page for AdWords and only there use the Google Forwarding Number.

Let me know if this helps!

Hi Ellie,

The easiest and most reliable way to detect AdWords traffic is to use auto-tagging, then look for the gclid value in the query string. You can set a custom variable in your tracking template using value track. If you are using GA, don't name it with utm_. Something like this: http://www.example.com/landingpage.php?network={network}

Where the click came from: "g" for Google search, "s" for a search partner, or "d" for the Display Network

For more Value Track parameters:

Best of Luck!

Hi Ellie,

Chet has the correct answer (I implement this solution several times every day). Yo place some Javascript on your site, and have a call extension in AdWords for your regular phone number.

AdWords visitors (and nobody else) will see Google's Call Forwarding number on your site instead of your own. When they call it, the call will be redirected to your regular phone number.

In AdWords the call will be tracked, and counted as a conversion against the correct keyword and ad.

This is a powerful, free tool and recommended for anyone who wishes to accurately measure AdWords success.
