Bug in adwords when joining remarketing + interest targeting?

Hi there!

I have been talking to google adwords support and searching online and cant seem to figure out this, seemingly, simple question:

  1. I have a remarketing campaign
  2. I am setting up ad groups with flexible targeting that combines the remarketing list with other targeting like:
  • Remarketing + keywords
  • remarketing + interests, etc

Case #1 - adgroup created by joining remarketing with interest targeting

here i set up an ad group with a remarketing list + interest targeting (computers). there is a small section underneath the targeting settings that has a radio button with two selections:

Show ads only to people associated with these lists or categories
Show ads to people associated with all eligible lists or categories
You can set individual bids on the lists or categories you added. Learn more

Which one do i select if i want a join of the two targeting methods ("and" not "or)?

  1. When i choose the top selection ('Show ads only to people associated with these lists or categories') i see the following:

Potential reach per week on the Display Network
1B - 5B
impressions
Your potential reach may be lower than shown because certain information, like keywords or ad formats, isn't included in these estimates. Learn more

The shaded area indicates potential reach according to your targeting settings.
Selected targeting
Interests & Remarketing

looks like  it is only showing the interests reach NOT the reach of the join of remarketing + interest targeting.

2. When i choose the lower selection ('Show ads to people associated with all eligible lists or categories') i see the following:

You haven't added any targeting methods
Your ads won't show unless you add targeting methods to your ad group. Select at least one targeting method, like keywords or placements.

Case #2 - adgroup created by joining remarketing with keyword targeting

here i set up an ad group with a remarketing list + keyword targeting (desktop computers, laptop computers, etc).

  1. When i choose the top selection this time ('Show ads only to people associated with these lists or categories') i see the following:
Potential reach per week on the Display Network
1M - 5M *
impressions
Your potential reach may be lower than shown because certain information, like keywords or ad formats, isn't included in these estimates. Learn more

The shaded area indicates potential reach according to your targeting settings.
Selected targeting
Display Keywords

Interests & Remarketing

This is what i expected. a venn diagram joining the two audiences.

2. When i choose the lower selection ('Show ads to people associated with all eligible lists or categories') i see the following:

The shaded area indicates potential reach according to your targeting settings.
Selected targeting
Display Keywords
Selected for bid management only
  Interests & Remarketing

Now the remarketing targeting is only being used for bidding?

help! totally confused...

Hi Jay,

Seems to me like the logical option should be No.1, "Show ads only to people associated with these lists or categories".

Case #1

The only reason I can think of that at the moment it only shows potential reach volume for the interests section, because it doesn't know how many people are in your retargeting list (whether it's a new list or an ever growing list, it never stays the same amount of people in the list) and as such, cannot predict how many impressions it will generate.

In short, it can only predict traffic for known quantities (people interested in computers) and not people on remarketing lists.

Therefore you only see one circle in the diagram.

Case #2

In this example because you have selected three targeted options (remarketing, interests, keywords) you see two circles joining in the diagram.

Summary

I could be completely wrong because I am just speculating based on your very well laid out post, but I think to achieve what you are trying to do you are to go with option 1 in case 1.

Does that clarify any?

Hi Outofbounds;

I will add to Jack's answer that I agree that understanding re needs background in group theory and Venn diagram;, Google should better explain manipulations on different targeting methods by using Venn diagram at the core, and not as a side graphic element;

Hello.

I'll give it a shot, while I'm waiting to receive an answer from a Google product specialist.

As far as I know (and seen in my accounts):

a) You cannot intersect two items belonging to the same targeting method. You can intersect them in many ways (http://support.google.com/adwords/answer/1209882/) but you cannot intersect a remarketing list and an interest category unless you create a custom list, where you define their intersection, and then use that new custom list for targeting. So if you want to show your ad only to people on your remarketing list which have "Arts and Entertainment" as an interest, create a custom list, and that should do it.

b) If you add an interest category or a remarketing list, and also use display keywords, and select the first radio option "Show ads only to people associated with these lists or categories", then your ads will show up on pages related to that keyword AND to people in your interest category. The moment you choose "Show ads to people associated with all eligible lists or categories", you're switching to OR mode, meaning your ads will show on any page related to that keyword, regardless of her interest or his remarketing list membership. However, the system is smart in this case, and allows you to say "ok, I want to bid higher if the person is part of my remarketing list". I may also state that you can add exclusions, and thus you are able to turn a general display campaign into a mixed one, which shows ads to everybody on a page, but bids higher for remarketing audiences, but also excludes some.

So, IMHO, there's no bug. It's just that maybe the way the two textual indications (Show ads to people associated with all eligible lists or categories and the other one, Show ads only to people associated with these lists or categories) do not quite match, logically, the Venn diagrams you see there.
