Sometimes your ad shows on first position, sometimes on a lower position. The average position is just simply the average of all positions your ad had (during the timeframe you are looking at).

I would add that "average" is misleading:

 

For example: What is the average of 2 (high rank) and 8 ? 5. Position 5 seems to be "a good slot in the middle"; However; 8 is probably a position "below the fold" - A position that the user is most likely to scroll down to see the ad. In other words - a position you rather not have your ad appear.
