Adwords Campaign Names showing up in Analytics

I've recently started several campaigns targeting very specific locations (thousands of places).

Due to the ad group restriction (50 ad groups per Campaign, and I have a different final URL per location/ad group), I have to create several campaigns. Since these are the same marketing campaign, I added "utm_campaign=campaign_xyz" so that in Analytics I could easily see the aggregated view, and compare them to the baseline of previous marketing campaigns.

However recently we connected our adwords account to our google analytics account, and now in the campaigns view I am seeing:

Campaign Location Set #1
Campaign Location Set #2
Campaign Location Set #3
etc.

instead of the utm_campaign parameter that is in the finalURL.

Is there a way to override this and see the campaigns based on the utm_campaign value? I can eventually get to the filtered data using regex or filtering by landing page URLs, but there's a bit more work in doing that.

Hi @Ray T if I'm understanding you correctly, you want to see aggregated data across a certain set of Campaigns in GA, yes?

Have you tried setting up a custom segment, using the Campaign name as a filter (assuming you have a unique part of the names you can use as a param).

Hi Ray,

If you only want Google Analytics to report the information you send manually via utm parameters you can turn of auto-tagging in your AdWords account.

Here is more information about auto-tagging: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1733663?hl=en

I hope that helps!

Thanks John, this is exactly what I was looking for. I wasn't aware of what auto-tagging meant. Looks like there's pros and cons to both, however for my purposes it's easier to bulk edit the utm parameters via adwords editor and then can see the campaigns easily the next day.

Thanks Jon, yes I set up a custom segments to see the versions using regex. But I didn't want to do that for every different campaign I would run.
I was looking for the option to turn off auto-tagging.

Hi Ray,

If I allow my utm parameters to override the auto-tagging, will the campaigns combine retroactively? For instance my utm param is utm_campaign=paid-search:makegeo, which shows xx sessions, but also appears as the name of the ad itself with yy sessions. Thanks!
