Hi Zee and Valentine,

Here is a recent post by a user that perhaps you could elaborate on.  There was not very much response.

Hi, it's great to have you here. Smiley Happy

It just recently happened to me that my YT campaign seemed to overspent something like 3-4%, but it turned out the difference was only the fraudulent views, at least this is what I think because the invoice was correct. How can we see "view fraud" data, just like we have this option in search and gdn campaigns?

Also: are you planning to launch any competitor metric, like impression share for YT campaigns?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi Zee & Valentine -

Is there a step-by-step tutorial on how to set up a new YouTube Promoted Videos campaign under the new AdWords system?

Thanks!

HI Tom,

Thanks a lot for suggesting this very good thread ! A lot of our Advertiser are often wondering how to they can get estimates for their ad campaign... With AdWords for video, it is now possible to get an estimate of the number of views that you could generate for your video for a budget, max CPV and targeting that you specify directly from the targeting workflow (standalone version for the traffic estimation tool is in the works).

From there, you can also work around to find out approximately how much it would cost you to generate a certain amount of views on your video. Detailed instructions in my answer here.

Hope this helps ! Keep the questions comming. Have a great day,

Valentine

Hi Dani,

Thank you for your question. I understand that invalid clicks in AdWords and views in AdWords for video are always a concern for our advertisers. Google is commited to provide reliable and valuable traffic to your channel/video/website through our advertising programs. Because AdWords for video is built on AdWords technology, the same high performing system used in AdWords for invalid clicks is applied to invalid views for AdWords for video. (more about this here).

It seems that the invalid click report, that you can see in AdWords is not yet available in AdWords for video. I forwarded this request to our team of engineers and they should be able to integrate this report to the tool within the next few months. You can also be assured that meanwhile, all invalid views that have been detected for your campaigns have not be billed to you, and have also been removed from your campaign reports so that you can monitor and optimize your campaign based on data for qualified views only.

Another reason why you may see in your reporting an overdelivery of 3-4% is because, specially when you just launched a campaign, AdWords for video tends to serve your ads slighly above the budget that you specified. You do get qualified views for this over-delivery, but as you have noted on you invoice, you are not billed for more than the budget that you indicated in your campaigns settings.

Because the "Analyze Competition" data for the Opportunity tab in your AdWords account only appies to Search on Google, you will not be able to get this report for campaigns running on YouTube and the Google Display Network, wheather they are created in AdWords for video or not. Be assured however, that our development team is always looking for more relevant metrics to offer to our advertisers, so that they can measure and understand better the performances of their campaigns and the value of their video ads.

I'm glad to hear that you tried campaigns on AdWords for video and hope that my few answers will understand better how the tool works.

Have a great day,

Valentine

Hi Mpgomatic,

I hope that you are doing well. YouTube promoted videos have now been integrated to the TrueView video ads formats, as TrueView in-search, appearing next or above search results on YouTube, and TrueView in-display, appearing next to video content on YouTube and on the GDN. TrueView in-slate (on YouTube long content) and TrueView in-stream (skippable commercial before the video that the user is trying to watch) are the 2 other placements included in the TrueView video ads family.

If your goal is to generate views on your video, we strongly recommend that you stay opted in all 4 formats when you create a TrueView ad through AdWords for video. This will allow you to run your video promotion accross all relevant placements on YouTube and the Google Display Network. Advertisers who have remained opted-in all 4 formats have noticed they they were generating on average 4 times as many views for the same budget as when they were only using promoted video ads.

We do have a full playbook for video advertising on YouTube that you can download from youtube.com/advertiser/getstarted. The step by step instructions on setting up your first video campaign through AdWords for video is located page 67-81 of the manual. You may also refer to the AdWords help center for instructions on how to get started, or details on how to read performance reports or optimize your campaigns.

In a nutshell, here is how you get started in less than 15 minutes:

  1. log in to your AdWords account on adwords.google.com/video this will direct you right away to the AdWords for video tool.

  2. Click on the "Linked YouTube accounts" link on the bottom left of your screen to make sure that your YouTube account is linked to your AdWords account. If it is not, here is how you do it:
a/ click the "Link YouTube Account" button
b/ in the new window that opened, log in to your YouTube account
You can link severa YouTube accounts to the same AdWords account, and have the same YouTube account linked to several AdWords accounts. Linking your YouTube account to your AdWords account allows you to create campaigns faster and to get access to advanced features and reporting such as video remarketing, call-to-action overlay management and video follow-on views/subscribers directly from AdWords for video

  3. Once this is done, click on "All video campaigns" in the left hand navigation column, then on "New video campaign"
to access the campaign setting and ad creation page.

  4. On this screen, you will be able to creat a new campaign and a new ad at once.
a/ Name your campaign and set up a daily budget for this campaign
b/ Select your geographic targeting and language targeting.
By default, we indicate geographic targeting based on your IP address.
Remove this targeting and use the search box below to set up another targeting if you need to.
c/ Click on "Select video" in the Ad settings to select the video that you would like to promote.
Because you already linked your channel, the video picker shows by default your videos from your channel
Click on the video tat you would like to promote
d/ By default you are opted in all 4 types of TrueView video ads, which gives you the best performances.
Just type in your ad text and select your video thumbnail (for TrueView in-search, in-display and in-slate)
Then indicate your destination URL (for TrueView in-stream and in-slate): website, channel, etc...
e/ Click on "Save and Continue" at the bottom of the page to access the Target Group Creation page.

  5. On this screen, you will be able to chose the audience that you would like to target for your ad, and assign a maxium Cost-per-View (CPV) to this target group.
a/ Name your target group and chose a CPV for this group.
This is the maximum amount that you would be ready to pay for a view from this audience.
Note the CPV suggestion next to the field to help you decide on an appropriate CPV in your market
b/ By default you are eligible to appear on all placements on YouTube video pages and on the GDN
Use the criteria in the "Target people who are watching" menu to restrict your targeting to your desired group
Note that when you add different targeting types, you are narrowing down your targeting.
It is recommended to only use one of the criteria (demographic, Topics or Interest) when you start, or you
can use a combination of demographic and topics, and demographic and interest.
c/ In the "Target people who are searching" indicate the keywords to be used for YouTube Search
You will not appear next/on top of YouTube search results unless you indicate keywords here.
The integrated Keyword suggestion tool, specifically made for YouTube can help you.

  6. Click on Save Targeting group. Congratulations ! You just created your first TrueView ad campaign with AdWords for video. Your ad will start running as soon as it gets reviewed and approved by our editorial team.

I hope these few instructions will help you get started with AdWords for video.

Have a great day,

Valentine

Many thanks for the comprehensive instructions, Valentine!

I'm just aiming for In-search on this project. In-stream and In-slate aren't a good fit for a number of reasons. I'm not sure about In-display .... I'd have to see some examples.  I'm looking for eyeballs with intent and true interest, rather than incidental views.

All the Best,

Dan
