Hi,

This business was registered with Google My Business a few years back. However, it really shouldn't have been; it is a web only business, the address provided here is the head office address and cannot be visited by members of the public. So ideally what I want to do is delete the listing entirely. As I understand it this isn't possible. I can stop managing the business but the listing will not go away - I'll just no longer be in control of it.

The main reason I want to delete it is to improve the companies branded search results. At the minute they look like this for me (browsing from North West UK on Google.co.uk):

We really don't want that local information panel there, as it doesn't look great but also it's of no use to users.

What's the best course of action here? How do I get rid of the local search information and/or delete the GMB listing entirely?

TIA for any input here.

Cheers, H

Hey there, Harry

I think if you mark this location as permanenly closed from your GMB, it will solve the problem.

In other way, you can ask some Google Map Maker editors to delete this location as "does not exist".

Thanks for your response Eugene. I'm a little nervous of marking it as permanently closed. I've seen businesses in the past that have been marked as permanently closed and then have a red banner across placed across the local panel saying 'permanantly closed' months after they have shut the doors.

The business is very much open and having this marker would have a significant detrimental impact on visits and revenue I think - so we couldn't afford for this to be the case even for a day or two.

To follow up your second point - where would I be able to get in touch with a map maker editor?

You're right, this huge red banner can make a bad deal for you.

Here is a link to Map Maker forum, where you can post your request:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/map-maker

Additionaly, you can try to contact support through GMB interface.

Thanks again for your advice Eugene. I've spent a bit of time looking into Google map maker. Google has a help article about deleting a place using Google map maker - https://support.google.com/mapmaker/answer/1065792?hl=en&ref_topic=2802435 and I also found a video tutorial describing these steps - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dB8Ghvrr54w

But the option they suggest (Edit > Delete) is not available to me - see screenshots below:

Is it only certain 'power users' that can delete features? Is this why you suggested I ask in the forum rather than just do it myself?

Yep, that's a reason. Deleting places require more power than editing, so possibly some regional lead can help you with it.

If it's an online only business then you can have the listing removed. As Eugene suggested, I would post on the Map Maker forum requesting assistance from a Regional Lead in the UK.

I have a situation in Barcelona where a brand has relocated multiple shops multiple times. There is no regional lead in Spain. How to remove the 8 to 10 old or sometimes duplicate locations and just keep the 4 actual open stores?

Permanantly closed won't help enough as the locations kept appearing on the map. In a desperate unsuccessful move I moved the place marker to the sea. Removing the business name and using only a dash "-" has made the open stores slightly better visible.
