I have 9, 5 star reviews for my business but it shows a score of 4.9. Why wouldn't the score be 5.0?

Whilst having other issues with posting reviews I was told by google customer service that one needs 13 five star reviews in order for the main map pin to show 5 stars. I can't even get my reviews to show because their spammers seem to have issues with them. Maddening as I am a psychotherapist and its hard for clients to post if they don't want it in their own names! Hope that helps. I can't trust what their customer service guys tell me though because they say something will work, it doesn't work then I hear a different story from their supervisor. Now I can't even find the contact me page haha!

Hi Jason

Google doesn't use a straight average when calculating their review average but rather takes into account a number of variables: "We calculate an overall rating based on user ratings and a variety of other signals to ensure that the overall score best reflects the quality of the establishment."

Whilst we outside of Google do not know what those 'other signals' are, Top Contributor and Professor Maps Mike Blumenthal wrote a very interesting opinion piece http://localu.org/blog/google-show-4-8-rating-5-star-reviews/ which does provide some background information.
