Thanks for posting. When you choose automatic bidding, the AdWords system looks at your keyword and campaign and tries to find the best bid for your keywords. If the campaign is new or doesn't have very much data the system may take some time to adjust to find the right type of bid for you.
Given your post, I'd recommend trying out manual bidding for a stretch of time with all your keywords to see how the performance goes with your idea of an appropriate bid. Once your keywords have some data to go on from this stretch of time, you might want to try out automatic bidding again, as at this point the system will have more data to work from to help you manage your bids.
