What is the best way to do PPC management for 100s of local clients?

A friend of mine works for an agency that gets contracts to do lead generation for local businesses.

The problem is that they might get several (100s or 1000s) of clients and they need to figure out how to automate most of the work.

What is the best way to do this?

Should they try to develop their own tools using Google API or just use 3rd party tools like wordstream, acquisio, etc.

Hello DelisaCeag; welcome;

There are pros and cons for every method;

If they are a big agency with programmers that know how to work / code with the API that would be the best;

However; if they are a small agency, with limited resources, a 3rd party tools would be the cost-effective. However, keep in mind, that "off the shelf" tools are not perfect, and could be that not all features needed are provided. Hence, the best is to write a technical specification, and to do a comparison between the (3rd party) tools available (on the market).

My opinion....

1. The problem is that they need a very scalable strategy (or strategies) for doing this. They might get 100s of clients each month. How are they going to do this on scale?

2. When are the capabilities of Adwords automated rules vs 3rd party tools Vs Adwords scripts?

Good morning, DelisaCeag -

It's simply not possible for us to offer a comparison of all the third party tools available on the marketplace--the selection changes often as new tools or new features become available. Google also rolls out new automation features in their UI frequently. There is no one absolute or best way to handle campaigns--whether a dozen of them or a thousand of them. Each agency makes its own decision.

The company needs to learn what the AdWords automated features can offer and decide for themselves if those provide the level of help they need to handle their client accounts. You can read some information about these here:

Common ways to use automated rules

Setting up automated rules

If they have 'thousands' of accounts, it's very likely that they'll want more automation than the built-in tools can provide. (Much depends on how many employees the company has who are qualified to do account management.) If the company has a programmer on staff, then using the API to build their own tool is a strategy many large agencies use. You can read about the AdWords API here:

AdWords API

Questions about the API can be asked in the API forum:

AdWords API Forum

Agencies without programmers on staff research the third-party tools mentioned above and decide which one will work best for them. Your friend's company needs to do their own research, decide what approach is best for them, then move ahead.

Good luck.

I agree with Theresa. I would recommend to work with API ; as long as there is  programmer  dedicated to the task
