Value Tracks parameters not substituted

Visitor ✭ ✭ ✭

Hi,

After few days using of 'Value Track' AdWords feature we have got strange behavior of system while parameters substituting:
some of them have values while some not.

Example:

Source url looks like:
http://dentessa.lead-or-call.ru?utm_campaign=protez&utm_source=adwords&utm_group=15210342304&utm_med...

Landing urls lloks like:
"http://dentessa.lead-or-call.ru/?utm_campaign=protez&utm_source=adwords&utm_group=15210342304&utm_me..."

We have:

{network} - g
{placement} - ''
{adposition} - none
{matchtype} - ''

The question is: As network is 'g' (Google Search results) why is {placement} is empty ?
In what position the click took place ?
The same question about {matchtype}.

One note: this happens from time to time with the same ad- sometimes we have all parameters, but sometimes we have above situation.

Help us please to understand the reason of this behavior.

Thanks in advance,
Sergey.

Hi Sergey,

Just to be sure I understand - when you say source URL, you mean this is what is in your account, correct (AdWords, Bing, or whatever it may be) and the landing URL is what it looks like when you click it?

I think the problem is that your ValueTrack parameters aren't appended correctly. You are missing a few ampersands (&) and a few aren't labeled. It might not be causing an issue but it would be best to ensure that your {} brackets aren't already resolved as %7D.

Try this URL: http://dentessa.lead-or-call.ru/?utm_campaign=protez&utm_source=adwords&utm_group=15210342304&utm_me...

Just a quick note - previously you had utm_medium={network} but network and medium aren't exactly the same, so I added a new network parameter and set medium to be PPC. If this isn't for PPC, you should update the medium gclid. Or if you prefer, you could delete either parameter altogether.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if it works!

Hi Sergey and all,

Here's an update:

Values within the Value Track Parameters aren't consistent and actually differ from website to website, based on how the site is relaying the information back to the user. It might be best in this scenario to check with the webmaster for the specifics on how the coding on the site might impact the Value Track Parameters. Hope that helps.

Thanks,

Mini

Hi Sergey,

I agree with Amy here. Your URL was missing a lot of '&'s' which is why most of your data was not being automatically pulled. Amy's suggestion on the revised URL's seems correct in my experience and should help you resolve this issue.

Do give it a try and check the data at your back end.

Cheers!

Hi Amy !

Thank for your reply, will answer in order of your suggestions:

1. Yes, you absolutely right - we call 'Source' the URL we create in our AdWords account with appropriate markers and 'Landing' is URL we have after click in our browser.

2. No, the parameters appended correctly - I have checked them no one time and moreover - this issue take place with the same URL from time to time - ie: the same URL can be correctly substituted one time and second time will not.

3. Thank you for your suggestion about naming parameters - you are absolutely right about difference of 'network' and 'medium' - we understand it. I have checked ampersands and encoding - everything is OK in account's ad editor, so the problem is not here.

Source (Accaunt) url looks like:
dentastom.com/?utm_source=adwords&utm_campaign=metro&utm_group=4313001543&utm_medium={network}-{placement}&utm_content={creative}-{adposition}&utm_keyword={keyword}-{matchtype}&utm_device={device}

May you check our issue one again, please.

Thank in advance,
Sergey Yanenko.

Hey Sergey,

Thanks for your response! I'm seeing the same issue I mentioned above. Take a look at this part of the URL &utm_medium={network}-{placement}   notice how the placement parameter doesn't have an ampersand or a naming convention? It should look like this: &utm_medium={network}&placement={placement}

The same thing is happening with your creative, and match type parameters.  You have:

&utm_content={creative}-{adposition}&utm_keyword={keyword}-{matchtype}

but it should be:

&utm_content={creative}&adposition={adposition}&utm_keyword={keyword}&matchtype={matchtype}

Also, for device, keyword, and medium/network you are using utm parameters but I would switch them all to be consistent. For instance, you have &utm_device={device} I would change it to be &device={device}

So, if we put it all back together, it would look like this:

?utm_source=adwords&utm_campaign=metro&utm_group=4313001543&&utm_medium={network}&placement={placement}&creative={creative}&adposition={adposition}&keyword={keyword}&matchtype={matchtype}&device={device}

Right now, you have it like this:

?utm_source=adwords&utm_campaign=metro&utm_group=4313001543&utm_medium={network}-{placement}&utm_content={creative}-{adposition}&utm_keyword={keyword}-{matchtype}&utm_device={device}

I hope this helps! As I mentioned before, I would also separate the utm_medium and network= parameters but that's up to you!

Hi Amy !

Thank you very much for your suggestion - now I'v understand you completely.
We will fix our markers and will see if this helps. The only strange thing in all this staff is we have problem only in 25% cases - other 75% substituted without problem.

Regards,
Sergey Yanenko.
