Using +keyword1 +keyword2 not working

Visitor ✭ ✭ ✭

I'm having an issue that honestly has me baffled.

According to: http://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2497836?hl=en

Broad match modifier

+tennis +shoes

Ads may show on searches for

tennis shoes
buy tennis shoes
best shoes for tennis

Ads won't show on searches for

running shoes
tennis sneakers

I'm using (for a client) +wedding +photographer.  It should show on

1) wedding photographer

2) hire a wedding photographer

3) best wedding photographer in dallas

It should not show on

1) photographer in Dallas

2) become a photographer

3) dallas pictures

But it is.  Why would this happen?  Isn't that *exactly* what it says it won't show up on?

In this case I doubt the problem is caused by broad match keywords in your account.

Have a look in to the search query report of each ad group. You may get a better idea.

I should note that if we remove the space +keyword1+keyword2 it works somewhat.

Hi HighonSEO,

Welcome to the community..!

I have a few queries first.

Do you have your modified broad match keywords in a separate ad group?

Do you have broad match keywords in your campaign?

Removing the space in between the modified broad match is incorrect. This is what Google says

Don't leave space between the plus sign (+) prefix and the word you're modifying!

•Correct: +leather +shoes
•Incorrect: + leather + shoes
•Incorrect: +leather+shoes

Yes, they are in their own ad group.  The same ad group has only two lines of keyword.

+wedding +photography

+wedding +photographer

We have different keywords in another active part of the campaign but they're of mixed types. Some exact [dallas wedding photographer] and some broad match. Lots of phrases in quotes in the other section, as well.

But we paused that section and the modified broad match still showed up.  So we figured it has to be from the + keywords.

Yes, we have +wedding +photography ... not + wedding or + photography.  +wedding+photography seemed to fix the problem somewhat even though Google says it's blatantly incorrect.  I'm so cornfused.

Thanks,

~Matt

Hi Matt,

So do you have only the modified broad match keywords now live in your account?

The example keywords above which triggered the ads

1) photographer in Dallas

2) become a photographer

3) dallas pictures

Was it from the search query report from the modified broad match ad group?

Can you please search the above keywords from within your account using ad preview tool.

It will show you which keyword/ad group is triggering your ads.

Just want to make sure, modified broad match is responsible for triggering that ads.

It says "broad match" but for keywords like:

dance photographers dallas

good photographers

dwf birth photographers

pin up photographers

It's only matching "photographers" not +wedding at all.  *nothing* in there says "modified broad match" or anything resembling that.

This is what I read:

---------------------------------

Setting up broad match modifiers

Just add a plus symbol (+) in front of one or more words in your broad match keyword. Each word preceded by a plus sign has to appear in someone's search exactly or as a close variant. Close variants include misspellings, singular and plural forms, abbreviations and acronyms, and stemmings (like "floor" and "flooring").

---------------------------------

This client has spent hundreds in the last couple months on a highly targeted campaign but realistically, at least some of these terms are bogus.  +wedding +photographers should return both, yes?  If that's true, this shouldn't have happened AFAIK.

The other ad group has like 30 different keywords and the report looks perfect.  But the one with +wedding +photographers is screwy.  We've been trying to narrow down the problem but I have no answer for the client, which makes me look like the schmuck (maybe I am, I just don't see it.)   Any ideas?

~Matt

I should also point out that using the ad diagnosis tool does *not* say the ad is running but clearly it is.  I just tested 5 or 6 of the "wrong" keywords and it says "not running" but he keeps being charged for these keywords.

Hi Matt,

Ad preview tool also provides information about the ad group. Please make sure your ads are triggered from Modified broad match ad group. It will be easy to find as you have a separate ad group

The preview tool says these keywords won't trigger it - but clearly they have been.

It did say something strange though:

"Because your query included location terms, ads matching this location are shown: TX-32, Texas, United States"

That's on a search for

dallas photographer

It says it's NOT showing but ads matching this location are shown?

When I search

wedding photographers

I get this:

Your ad is showing for the keyword +wedding +photographers ( Active > AdGroup )

So it says these this ad group is not triggered by these keywords.  But it is.
