I am helping a client that sells NHL-branded (original) products.

Can I put NHL and/or NHL® in the ad text?

Hi there;
No, you cannot use, unless you receive authorization form the trademark owner.

Thanks but via the link I read the following which states that in our case, where the landing page resells the trademark products, it is an approved exeption: https://support.google.com/adwordspolicy/answer/6118

If the linked page says your usage is an approved exception, then you should not run into issues.

If you do get a trademark disapproval on your ads, you can always apply for an exemption.
