Target search page location strategy - how many times per day ?

Hello,

I was wonderding about this "flexible strategy " , Target search page location described here

http://adwords.blogspot.ro/2013/05/new-flexible-bid-strategies-available.html

1) How many times per day "tries to get your ads to the top of the page" , does it try every hour or only once per day and when exactly ? This is because I am currently using 23 automated rules to update this raise every hour.

2) What data does it use , data from the same day for "estimated top of page bid" or data from last day, or from the past 7 days ?

3) Why does it say "Once you’ve created a flexible bid strategy, you can apply it to specific keywords, ad groups, and campaigns and monitor its performance." when 2 out of 4 strategies cannot be applied to keywords as I can see in my account ?

Hi Adrian,

Thanks so much for your patience while our specialists looked into some answers for you! I have listed them out below each of your questions:

1) ) How many times per day "tries to get your ads to the top of the page" , does it try every hour or only once per day and when exactly ? This is because I am currently using 23 automated rules to update this raise every hour.

This rule is applied many times per day. Unfortunately, we do not have specifics as to how many times exactly it is applied or at what exact times but our specialists did confirm many times per day.

2) What data does it use , data from the same day for "estimated top of page bid" or data from last day, or from the past 7 days ?

It uses data from the last 7 days.

3) Why does it say "Once you’ve created a flexible bid strategy, you can apply it to specific keywords, ad groups, and campaigns and monitor its performance." when 2 out of 4 strategies cannot be applied to keywords as I can see in my account ?

Essentially, with this answer, there are four kinds of bid strategies. 2 of them can be applied at the keyword level, the other 2 cannot, as you mentioned. Perhaps the wording should be changed here, as you are correct that it does state "keywords" in that description. We have let our engineers know about this phrasing and they will decide whether it should be changed or not. For more information on the different types of flexible bid strategies, please see this article from our Help Center:

I hope that helped answer your questions, Adrian! Have a wonderful day Smiley Happy

Thank you, this is important because competition can be higher for a couple of hours per day and the estimate must keep up with that situation and follow the ascending and descending daily curve.

Very nice dog you have. I used to have a beagle Smiley Happy

All right then, I'll stick to automatic rules for now, because I have set data from the same day for estimates ( the average for the last  7 days is not good when weekends lower the average because of nobody bidding ). A lower average can prove to be actually a wrong estimate for "today" and they may not appear on the first page after all because of this 7 days time-frame.

If the tech team makes an analysis of any account they can see that estimates for "today at 13:00" being a week day, are higher than average first page estimates from last 7 days ( that does not include today by the way ).

"Many times per day" also isn't very useful to tailor an exact adjustment but I guess it is a better solution for people who do not use automatic rules yet they want some automatic adjustment. I see this situation as a version of "similar audiences" at least with those you do not target the whole internet so it is a not-perfect but at least better choice.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Hello Kristin
I have a question about the explanation :

This rule is applied many times per day. Unfortunately, we do not have specifics as to how many times exactly it is applied or at what exact times but our specialists did confirm many times per day.

What do you mean by that? I mean the part : This rule is applied many times per day.

Hi Elja,

Thanks for the follow up question. That answer is regarding Adrian's first question and means that we cannot give specifics on how many times that particular rule tries to update, but we do know that it does check many times per day. We just cannot specify exactly how many times and when.

I hope that makes sense Smiley Happy

Thanks!

Kristin

I'll tell you what it does. It targets at a certain segment of users who need peace of mind. They think that a google tool that is called "strategy" does something smart for them "just in case" the bid they set themselves falls below the top of page bid.

They trust it and they use it to sleep better at night. It is a psychological need that many consumers have. It is why insurance companies have profit.
