Hi Everyone,

I´m facing some questions  with my search/display remarketing lists, they seems too small in comparison with our website unique user, Our traffic come from many different places not only from Google, In fact most of our Traffic come from partner websites.

As per Google Support Remarketing List for search only get cookies from people who come from Google Search and Display Remarketing List get cookies from people who only visit our website from Display Network and Google Partener websites.

My question is if the traffic come from an adwords ad in Search, will it also collect the cookie for the Remarketing list in Search?  which traffic sources are collected with the Search Remarketing Tag?

What about the traffic from third party sites NO Partners with Google, for example Bingads, will it collect the cookie also in any of the remarketing list?

Thank you for your help.

Antonio,

Let me attempt to clear up a few things. The remarketing list are created based on a piece of code that is added to your website, or the modification of your Google Analytics code.

Depending on your placement of the code, and which code Adwords, or Google Analytics you use will determine how your list grows. Normally you can track all visitors, via either method and then segment that list into another list by creating rules in a basic if- then situation.

Step 1 - Determine if you are creating your marketing lists via Google Analytics or via Google Adwords Tag.

Google analytics tracking - https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/2611268?hl=en

If analytics you need to add a extra piece of code.

If through Adwords - details here
https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2701222

Step 2 - make sure your code is correct on the pages in which you want to track.

With adwords tag, if you want to track all visitors to your website, the the code needs to be on all webpages, If you just want to track people who converted or pruchased, the code needs to be on those thank you pages, etc.

with GA code remarketing, make sure you updated your code.

Step 3 - check the list creation rules.

Hi Antonio,

Welcome to the AdWords Community Smiley Happy

My question is if the traffic come from an adwords ad in Search, will it also collect the cookie for the Remarketing list in Search?

Ans is yes. when someone searches on the Google and visits on your website, a cookie store in system's browser. Then this user has been added in your Remarketing list for search ads.

What about the traffic from third party sites NO Partners with Google, for example Bingads, will it collect the cookie also in any of the Remarketing list?

Any traffic that come from any sources like bingads and any other affiliate channel, all has been added into Remarketing list for Display. But these can not be added into Remarketing list for search.

Hello, Antonio.

Please note that what you see in AdWords with regards to the list size is usually updated only once, maybe twice a day (in case things did not change recently).

So you may have ten thousand visitors between lunch and dinner today and still see that your list only has 150 members, until maybe tomorrow morning when it will be updated.

On the other hand, I'll have to disagree with Rakesh on this one, as from what I know, once you place the remarketing tag on your website, every visitor to that page, regardless of the traffic source, will be added to that list, in case you did not specify some rules that might exclude that visitor (in Google Analytics). Direct traffic, referral traffic, organic, paid, you name it, they all can grow your list, not just people coming through sites that are partners with Google.

Here's a reference: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2701222?hl=en and a relevant sentence "The code tells AdWords to add every site visitor to your list."

Thank Calin for correcting meSmiley Happy

Today I have learnt, why there is discrepancy between Search Remarketing list size and display Remarketing list. Here, Craig has explained all users has been added into Remarketing list except the users who (have logged into Google Account) are not eligible to be added to Remarketing List for search due to user privacy.
