Negative KW Still Appears on Search Term Report - Why?

The subject pretty much states it. We already have a specific term as a negative KW that applies to ALL campaigns. And yet when I checked the search term report for the terms that we've paid for last month, the negative KW is there. We got charged for the term even though it clearly states that it is an "excluded" keyword.

Am I missing something?

HeIlo,

You are looking at a large time-frame , 1 month, it could have been be "excluded" after the click.

Are you sure that keyword that you see as an "excluded" search term was excluded since June 2014 , before the report ?

For example today the account manager looks at the search terms report, excludes 10 search terms from it and you come back 2 days later and they are still in the report with the label "excluded" in front of them.

Hi Sandy A,

What exactly is the term and what match type are you using? These could all play a factor in determining whether or not to exclude a term.

Furthermore, if a users search query is longer than 10 words and your negative appears after the 10th word it will not be excluded. Google 'ignores' negatives that are the 11th word or more.

So if you could share the Keyword with match type as well as the negative with match type and the users search query we should be able to tell you what is happening.

Thanks Clynton. The KW is "porn hub" (phrase match). It has been listed as a negative KW a long time ago and yet when I checked the search term report for last month, it's there: "porn hub" (also phrase match).

You got it! I realized the term was added sometime after August already started. My search term report covered Aug 1 to 31 so the search and click for the term might have occurred during the initial days of August.

Many thanks!

Is the negative at the ad group level, or campaign level, or shared list level ?

Could the term be a slight misspelling of the negative keyword ?

Can you test with the Ad Preview Tool the negative keyword to see if it triggers your ad and from what keyword ?

It think the search term might have included a character that the system ignores such as a dot and you see it in the search terms report only as a space.

Ok, Anyway, always test your entire negative keywords list with the Ad Preview tool a few hours after adding the negative keywords to make sure they work.

Thanks Adrian. The neg KW is at a shared list level that applies to virtually all of our campaigns. The term is exactly the same as the one on the search term report (however only as far as I can see it). Will make sure to utilise the Ad Preview Tool.

By the way, the possibility of a system glitch is something to watch out for. Will take note of that. Many thanks again.
