Keyword tool: How to determine best choice from search results

My keyword tool searches either have high competition and low monthly searches or no results at all. I really don't understand the concept of how this tool is useful in selecting the best keywords. Do I want to go with low competition/ high monthly searches? or something else? Some searches I did have no monthly results, but on Google same search shows 12,000,000 results. This is confusing.

Hello MTPCT; welcome to Adwords;

The keyword tool is a supporting tool, aimed to assist you finding  relevant keywords for  your campaign.

The numbers presented, are based on Google's  statistical raw data. ( And obviously,  you  can't  "force" the data to change, if you want  it to be reliable)

The best "pick" for keywords would be  brainstorming for relevant keywords for your business, combined with using  the keyword tool  as a supporting tool.

Are you aware that you can refine the search by match types?

On the left hand side of your screen in the Keyword Tool, you will see there an option for keyword "Match Types".

  • Broad
  • Phrase
  • Exact

Undoubtedly, keywords in broad match would yield a larger volume of clicks compared to phrase and exact match.

I also look on the data like:

  • Local Monthly Searches
  • Global Monthly Searches
  • Approximate Cost Per Click

My best practices in utilizing the keyword tool are as follows :

  • Choose High,Medium & Low Competition Keywords
  • Choose Exact to Target Niche Market
  • Choose Broad Keyword + Location
  • Choose negative keywords

Hi MTPCT,

You want to target relevant keywords.

By targeting relevant keywords you create a win/win situation, where searchers are happy to come to your site and therefor they convert (which make you happy)

Choosing keywords are not that easy, when you actually try it;-) I have written a article/video about how I choose target keywords: keeyword.com/how-to-decide-if-a-keyword-belongs-in-your-keyword-list/

I hope it helps,

Brian
