Issue with remarketing list population/URL matching

Hi

I'm trying to setup remarketing for one of my campaigns and it doesn't seem to be working properly. I have setup AdWords remarketing tags to fire on all pages through Google Tag Manager.

I have run Google Tag Manager preview and it shows the remarketing tag firing. In AdWords > Shared Library > Audiences, it says "Your AdWords tag is active".

In AdWords, I have created 3 audience lists:

  1. Visits to a particular page (Rule based: URL contains xxx)
  2. Conversions (Tag based)
  3. Non-Converting Visitors (Rule based: List[1] - List[2])

As you may be able to tell, I'm trying to remarket to people who visited a particular page but did not convert. The problem I'm experiencing is, List[1] isn't populating properly, showing 7 members only which isn't right because over the last 30 days, I've had over 100 clicks to that page from AdWords alone.

I have been running the list for over 30 days now so it can't be due to data lag. I can't seem to figure out why this is the case as I'm "pretty" sure that the URL matching for List[1] is correct. I'm simply using URL contains xxx.

Am I missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There doesn't seem to be any problem with the rule itself.

Does your page take a really long time to fully load by any chance? When you look at Chrome's developer tools, in the Network tab, what do you see in the timeline?

Hi Danny,

In case everything looks fine i.e. the AdWords tag is active, list is increasing but slowly etc, then the only possibility I could think of the issue could be with the URLs, where it might be possible that the rule you have applied is not able to find some particular URLs and due to which the list is not increasing the way you want. That's my understanding here.

Also check the membership duration which you have set.

I hope you might be using the advanced rules for your remarketing lists and make sure you follow the rules for AND and OR properly so that there is no discrepancy. Read the detailed instructions here:- https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2454064

I hope that helps somewhere!

Pankaj

Membership duration is 60 days so that wouldn't be the issue.

Have it only matching 1 URL so I'm not using the AND/OR rules.

Can you share the actual string you're trying to match and maybe even the full URL where your tag is firing?
When you create or edit the list, what result do you get from the "Estimate list size" button?

Typical issues can be around http vs https, case sensitivity, trailing slashes or lack thereof, trying to match based on anchors, etc...

Sure.

The URL I'm trying to match is {hostname}/vet-fee-help-courses/diploma-of-business-bsb50207.html

In AdWords audience list, I'm doing, URL contains diploma-of-business-bsb5020.

When I do the estimate list size, it says list is empty. I've also checked include past users who match these rule.

Thanks Maxime! I think this did the trick. I managed to find out the remarketing tag wasn't firing and figured out why it wasn't firing as it had something to do in the Google Tag Manager firing rules.

I've fixed this now - let's hope the data will populate as I expect it to then.
