Include plurals, misspellings, and other close variants not working

Hi there,

I was under the impression that Phrase Match Include plurals, misspellings, and other close variants would catch plurals, singulars and misspellings but this doesn't seem to be the case.

Example:

Keyword we are bidding on:

"accounting schools"

This keyword shows for "accounting schools" but doesn't show for the following keywords:

  1. accounting school
  2. accountant school
  3. accountant schools
  4. acounting school
  5. acounting schools
  6. accounting skools

I was under the impression that the campaign settings would catch these type of keywords but they keep telling us that an adult classification is preventing our ads from showing for the keywords listed above, but the ads show just fine when we type in "accounting schools" - odd isn't?

Hello Derekad,

You are correct those keywords are supposed to be included in close variants but in keep in mind your account history & quality score could play a part in the impression share that you get for those keywords.

For me if its an important keyword, I wouldnt so much worry about mispellings as much as I would worry about the plural form being included.  Lets say your best converting keyword is "accounting school" then its safe to say that including "accounting schools" in the same ad group is important.  I wouldnt rely on the sytem to figure it out, I would add it, bid aggressively on the keyword & gauge the conversion & CPA then rely on my own metrics (Keyword Details) report to figure out if its worth including in my camapign or not.

For more info on keyword matching options check out this link:  http://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2497836?hl=en

I hope this helps.

it doesn't work for our an entire account. We've went through every single keywords, tried misspellings, plural, acroynms, ect... for every adgroup and it always says this message:

"An Adult classification is preventing your afrom showing."

We have another client that has an accounting program and we have no issue with keywords showing up with their account. I'm thinking there is an issue with this account itself.

Called adwords specialist and they can't figure it out as well.

Hi Derekad,

One small thing to add in here.  Double check your Advanced Campaign settings and ensure you've selected the correct 'Keyword Matching Options'

I copied this from the page PPCSophie linked to above - it was a bit hidden.  Although these instructions are for resticting matching...the opposite is what you want to check for.

Follow these steps to restrict exact and phrase matching:

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account at http://adwords.google.com/.
  2. Click the Campaigns tab.
  3. If you'd like to restrict your exact and phrase matching for a new campaign, click + New campaign. If you'd like to restrict your exact and phrase matching for an existing campaign, select that campaign and click the Settings tab.
  4. Scroll to the "Advanced settings" section. Click the Keyword matching options link. Keep in mind that if you don't see the link, it might be because you can only restrict your exact and phrase matching for certain campaign types, like "Search Network only - All features."

    See keyword matching options
  5. In the "Exact and phrase match" section, select Do not include close variants.

Hope this helps!

Hi Again,

If this is the case, you will need Google to take a look at your account.  There isn't much we're going to be able to help you with.

Sorry.

This is what we have selected for keyword matching options for the entire campaign. But singulars, misspellings and other close variants do not work for this entire account... even though we have it selected. Picture below from our account setttings.

the message:

Only shows when we use words that are singular, misspellings and other close variants.

I've called them twice but they don't understand why the keywords are not triggering our ads.

Oddly enough, if I put the singular version of the keywords in, the ads have no issue with displaying. We have other accounts with the same type of programs with no issue at all using close variant matching options.

Hi Derek,

Since you've tried support already and have not been able to find a resolution, I'll see if I can get someone to review your account again.

Please understand that today could be a holiday for some folks and you may not hear back until next week.
